How old does a dog have to be before field training is hopeless? My dog is extremely birdy, has a soft mouth, and learns new things quicker than my kids. So what would prevent me from finally training him for flushing and retrieving birds at his age (just turned 6)? I'm not looking for a field champ, I just want my best pal in the field and boat with me.

I intended to train him when I brought him home as a pup, but life got in the way of my plans. I assumed he was too old when things finally calmed down, so I never gave it more thought until recently.

The only thing that would prevent you at this point is more laziness. If he likes being in the field, likes birds, and likes you, sounds like he's got all the ingredients needed.

lol, pretty sure it wasn't laziness that caused it - but thanks for your reply. It would only be a laziness issue if he would suddenly prefer to be a 90lb decorative couch pillow all day instead of just part of it.
