THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
I recently adopted an adult gsp who is about 7yrs old and he listens well to my commands in the house, my yard and on a friends ranch that he goes to about 1 day a week, but when we are in a new spot once he is about 20ft from me he is off to go sniff around and could not care less what I am telling him. The "where is my owner" thought is out of his head and I have to leash him up before i can regain his attention. any suggestions would be great on how to keep his focus on me when we are in new situations. Here are a few pics of the critter.

I say Nobama.

Work on the "come" command inside to get the basics down. Say "come", hold up a treat, and when the dog runs to get the treat, grab his collar and hold it while he chews (so he doesn't take the treat and then run off again).

Then go outside (in a fenced area) with 2 or more people with treats. 1st person says "Come <dog's name>! " and then gives a treat to the dog and grab the collar when it comes over. Let the dog eat the treat. When he starts wandering off smelling stuff, person 2 says "Come <dog's name> !" and gives the dog a treat. Just keep going back and forth until you or the dog gets tired of practice.

Also, try to avoid casually saying "come" to the dog. Say "over here" or something if you aren't going to give him a good reward and grab his collar.

I have a gsp, they will test you, if the dog know the commands and just refuses to obey, get an E collor and watch the disc that comes wit the good ones, it will make a big difference with your dog

OMG E-collars are amazing! . I have had one for about a week and even if he is under a full sprint in one direction he will make a tight U-turn and come right back to me with just the beeper tone, no shock at all. Same if he is outside playing and i want him to come to me, I simply press the beeper tone and he is one the way back inside to look for me. The dog listens so much more now, i should have ordered one of these the day i got the dog!

Does he still listen to you without the ecollar? Or does he go back to his old ways when not wearing it?

I know my 3 yr old GSP goes nuts when we drive out to go hunting or training.
I try to go to different places all the time. I am resolved to let her run around
like an idiot for the first 5 or so minutes, as she is so excited. I try to minimize
the commands be it whistle or voice (I dont run an e-collar). It usually tires her
out enough so she realizes why were there and starts acting and working like she
should.

Lately shes been "ranging" a little too far so I hide on her. She hates that and comes
right back. I'm pretty lucky in that she likes to be close and works close to me.

I can relate. My lab has about a 30 ft range, and once she gets outside of that her sight, scent, and chase instinct can turn off her hearing.

If I can give her a command, any command, before she gets outside of the zone, I've got her. If not, it takes a much louder yell.

I have a heavy duty plastic military whistle I use for my lab. Even with his head down a groundhog hole he can hear that whistle. I hid from first lab a couple times who hated that and always kept an eye on me after that.

Shock collar. I won't leave home without it.

My coondog is kind of an asshole when he is on a trail. Perfect dog otherwise

I don't even take the remote with me though, he is collar smart and it works to my advantage. I put the weighted collar on and we go out in public, great dog. I take it off and he really tests his boundaries.
