I used to use Purina Pro Plan but just switched to Native to try it out. The big thing on Native (by Kent) was: no byproducts listed and the dog food is exactly the same between Performance (which includes multiple levels) and Maintenance so there is no needing of mixing when season comes up for performance and then dropping her back when its over.

I feed Buckeye...dealer is close, reasonably priced, and the hounds do real well on it.
That said I used to feed National. It was real good feed and priced right considering the dogs would do good on less. one of the top ingredients was rice, as in the Native feed. I would not be afraid to try it and if it was good the dogs could try it also

used to use science diet for my lab, but when we got our second our breeder had her on biljac so we kept her on that then decided to switch our 2year old to it. since then he's never left a piece in his bowl and i believe its better for them |

Used Nutromax large breed puppy on rec from the breeder......
Trying Natures Variety Prairie, seem to be getting much less waste now. Quite a few other excellent foods out there but many are super high protien. I also throw her a meatball every day too. |

Purina Dog Chow. Its cheap and the dogs will eat it. Though they get most of their nutrition from scraps.

Canidae is what we fed up until a couple weeks ago when we ran out of the "old" stuff... They've gotten big enough that they are now being mfg'd by Diamond, and have changed their recipe but won't tell what is in it. Suspect it's like the other junk made by Diamond. Have heard from rescue president that a lot of the dogs she's hearing about who have continued to use it through the switch are having diarea and such. Plus, the prices have gone up ~30% over the last 6 months...
We've switched to California Natural herring and sweet potato, and the dogs seem to be doing fine with it. It's also a 4-star food (most anything you can buy at Walmart, or even Pet Smart is 1 to 2-star... Iams, Science diet, Euk., Nutro (standard, the "holistic" Nutro is good), etc.) without any of the bad things you don't want to see in food, like the others mentioned above have. Other good foods are Evo, Solid Gold, Acana, Blue Buffalo, Fromm Gold, Innova, etc. Don't go to a 5-star food unless you have sled dogs or REAL farm dogs that run ALL DAY and can process the extra protien, or they will have the runs from it. Loyal ,,, quit using diamond few years ago after killing three (3) of my dawgs , liver failure , alfitoxin corn base feed. Catahoula curs , hawg dawgs , only four (4) now.

I used to feed Science Diet to all of my dogs.

For you Nutro feeders....I used to only feed Nutro. It was the only food I could feed my lab without causing food allergies, ear infections, shedding, etc. My lab has been diabetic for the past 2 years with twice daily injections of insulin. I think his problems may have been caused by using Nutro. If you love your pet you should reconsider using Nutro products.

I feed my gsp Innova Evo Red Meat. Very high protein and low carb, no grain. Bison, venison, beef. If you feed a major store bought brand, ie Science Diet or Iams, you are slowly poisoning your animals. These companies are owned by larger companies like nestle and johnson and johnson and are garbage. Do some research, you will be horrified what's in there. Innova, and there are several others, is human grade and although it costs more you feed less. My sister is a vet/researcher for texas a&m university and did a 10 year study on pet food and what she found makes me sick. We are unknowingly poisoning our pets. I blame myself first for not researching what I was feeding, but Science Diet second for scamming the public into thinking that their food was healthy and poisoning several of my pets. The only reason vets sell that crap is because they buy it for $5 per bag and sell it to you for $25. Yes, pets can and do live healthy lives on grocery store bought food, but just do some research and you will discover that there are far better alternatives out there. Google "truth about pet food." Decide for yourself.

I tried nutro with my current britt but she gained a bunch of weight and kept wanting more food even after she ate what she got. went right through her too. i mixed it with the pmi for a while but it didn't help. only reason i switched from the PMI was i moved and had to drive an hour to get it. it was worth the drive for her :)

I use wellness large breed puppy now but recently switched from the solid gold wolfcub. I think my dog preferred the flavor of the solid gold, although I have noticed his coat looks a bit better on the wellness. so far he's making nice stools, very regularly on the wellness. I was pretty happy with the solid gold as well, the only reason I switched is because it was becoming hard to get.

All most to drunk to type but i will try anyway. I have feed my dogs Purina since I was a year old. Well i didn't actually feed them that young that was just the food my parents used. I put my first doberman to sleep when I was 19 years old. that's my entire childhood with the same dog and the same food. Next a pit bull 16 years on Purina dog food. Not to shabby if I may say so. My latest dogs are twin sisters born in 2002 and still going strong! We feed them Purina dog chow. Born and raised on the stuff without any complications because of food for 38 some years. I will swear by it and my next dog will get Purina green bag also.
So as far as there puppy chow and old dog mixes I will save my money. |
