unfortunately Streaker got killed when our truck got hit by an 80 pound IED on November 15 2011. myself and the 3 army guys in the truck were all ok and walked away, flown out with concussions but that's all. Streaker was laying on the floor, he was hit with the blast which threw him around causing internal trauma and knocking him out which caused his death.

I hope to make a good family pet that will hunt. View Quote GWP? Looks very similar to my Maddie who is now 17 months old. She is in her second bird season. Last year at 4 months old she hadn't had any hunting specific training other than I made sure she wasn't gun shy She was good at recall and would honor other dogs points and rarely bumped a bird. She got to run loose with the adults the entire season. Towards the end of the season she kind of had things figured out, pointed reasonably well and would retrieve. The main goal was to get her birdy, and damn is she ever birdy! In the off season I got her steady on whoa, worked on quartering, and "dead bird". This year thus far she has been doing very well, a few rough edges but nothing we can't fix. The main issue is she really doesn't want to be steady to wing so we are working on that. She'll be a pro next year. I'm a big fan of the Delmar Smith method of training. Schedules and locations have never lined up for one of the seminars, but there are books: http://www.amazon.com/Best-Way-Train-Your-Gun/dp/0679507507 Here she is a few weeks ago practicing whoa in the front yard. |

Pearl is actually an Llewellyn Setter from what we've been told. She was found by a lady that put her pic on a local lost and found in Tyler. We were in-between fosters for the local SPCA and went and got her from the lady. We think she was someone's hunting dog that went after something and never stopped. As a house/companion dog she does great, well mannered and intelligent. But she's an older gal about 10 yrs old or more and loves her dog bed or the sofa more than anything. She can still get quite "Birdy" when out on walks. Her energy level is quite higher than her ability level. She has arthritis in her hips and ankles to the point of pain meds when the weather changes drastically. She loves our other dogs and really liked it when we would foster puppies. She's not afraid to teach manners to younger dogs either. If you want one as a companion, I recommend a large, well fenced yard, chain link was no match for ours when we got her. And plenty of exercise. SWESR just took in a male about a month ago that was found about 10 miles north of where we're at now. We would definitely have another Setter if the opportunity presents itself. |

Here is Morgan Lasereyes, she just turned one a few days ago. Great family dog and a natural hunter! This was her first real hunt out in SD at 7 months.

Attached File Attached File Attached File Shadow, boomer, and willow. I’ve never seen a better grouse dog than shadow (medium sized settter). He’s out hunted anyone’s dog I’ve hunted with but has zero manners He doesn’t miss much but when he does…he refuses to honor other points…can’t have it all I guess. Boomer is my big boy. Nothing to write home about. He’s not my speed, but he’s a steady dog. I’ll probably have him neutered if he doesn’t improve in a season. He’d make a very good hunting preserve dog. Willow is my pup. She’s a distant cousin of shadow. If she’s anything like shadow I’ll have a litter with them. |
