My Britt, Admiral. 3 years old and the best dog I have ever had. We got him from a friend. Tried to change his name, but he likes Admiral better.

My lab will pheasant hunt. He does not point but he sure will flush the birds and bring em back to ya. Not too sure how well a GSP would do at duck hunting in SD but I am sure if you get a good one you could give it a try. |

I duck hunt with a couple of mine here in Oregon. The key to duck hunting with a gsp is to teach them sit, stay and hush from a very early age. The first couple of times you'll have to reinforce the "hush" command but once they figure out the game they'll be hooked. GSPs are suppose to be good retrievers. Some will pin a bird and leave it for you to pick up but this is usually due to bad habits. I make my dogs bring the bird back to me to my hand. That's part of their job. It takes a little discipline at the start but once they've learned that in order to go out for the next bird to finish their work on the first they'll do just fine. There are somelines of GSPs that are not strong retrievers. Typically these are dogs from more showlines though some of the field trial dogs have a lot of pointer bred into them and pointers are not as good of retrievers as a GSP would be. A tall tail sign of this is think skinned. The thinner the skin on a GSP the less likely it is a 100% GSP. Thin skin is also something to shy away from if you're going to duck hunt. They will get too cold. I'm a bit of a p^ssy when it comes to hunting in a blind myself. I bring a propane furnace to mine and I keep a towel to dry off my dog after a wet retrieve [the best duck hunting is in the most miserable conditions]. GSPs are from Germany and I do believe Germany gets as cold as South Dakota so don't shy away from a GSP just because you think it'll get too cold. Good food [high protein], a towel and water along with good breeding and you should be fine. Hunting pheasants in South Dakota you can get away with a lab but here in Oregon there's not competition between the two breeds at all. A GSP will bag 10 times the birds as a lab will. Best wishes, Patty |

Check out the Drahthaar. They will point your upland birds and retrieve all your waterfowl too. Then if you need to blood track some deer they will do that too. They have better coats to handle the cold then a GSP does. http://www.vdd-gna.org |

A wire hair is another choice for pointing and cold weather retrieving. Be cautious with that breed as they can have aggression problems due to being bred for guarding property, livestock and people as well as hunting. Good info here. |

I didn't notice that, that's just damn funny. Apparently just her pointing is a little off because she can find the birds no problem. Unless the bird landed after she was pointing. |

Liver/White English Springer Spaniel aka "the terrorist puppy" she'll retrieve, we're haveing a problem with "drop it"... chew it apart seems to be the trend, she's about a year old

Hey boknows20 I didn't know you were an ARFCOMMER! Its good to see you and the puppers again.
I logged on to brag up my new pup but was amazed to see my two grandpuppies Here's my new pup. I've waited a really long time to get this boy. I always wanted a male dog out of my old foundation dog Trevor: ![]() However something always got in the way when the opportunity arrived, health issues, financial issues, I was always saying to myself "the next litter I'm keeping a male" yada yada yada. Finally about three years ago I got my male and he was perfect. His mother is a daughter of my dog Sonny [see above] so it was a combination of my dog Sonny & Trevor. My puppy was beautiful conformation wise, had Sonny's awesome Temperament and training abilities, he was all I could hope for with one exception - he turned out to only have one descending testicle. Not a huge issue for most but since I raise, train & show GSPS he had to be neutered and eventually sold. Well to make a long story short a man from New Hampshire contacted me about breeding his bitch to my old dog's frozen semen [Trevor died at age 15 two years ago]. His bitch is a dual champion am. field champion and master hunter. Her father was also a 3/4 brother to my old Trevor, who is a member of the GSPCA Hall of Fame. Here's mom: ![]() I didn't really want a puppy right now as I'm going through a nasty divorce and my life is chaotic and to make matters even worse my last litter of pups had parvo so I have that to deal with for a while. Here he is pictured at 8 weeks of age: ![]() Needless to say I'm very pleased with my new little boy. |

Your new puppy looks good. I can not believe how much Max looks like Sunny in pictures. We picked up another rescue.. Meet Buddy, a 10 year old GSP from north Georgia. Although Max and Summer are having a hard time excepting him in the pack. ![]() ![]() ![]() After Max and him got into it a few months ago... ![]()
