Take him shopping to get him some of his own gear.
New shoes, mess kit, glow sticks.

Keep him entertained the whole day in the campground, walks, nature, etc.  Will sleep like a baby after a great day.  Good on ya, OP.

Good idea - will do, as I need to get a bit of frozen shrimp anyway. The plan is to catch, clean and cook up whatever we catch for dinner.

Sounds like a great time op.  I'm personally waiting until my son is about 3 and a half to do camping as we already spend a lot of time on our farm and it's easy for us to just get in a bed at the end of the day.

At 3 they are still absorbing everything they see so any kind of learning would be great for him like teaching him about bugs, trees, etc.

Congrats on the new grandson!

Good plan on the catch and eat, but if he has never eaten that way before, make sure you have an extra pb&j packed, or some frozen chicken nuggets you can cook over the fire.

Only other main suggestion is some good child friendly bug spray, a citronella candle, and check him every 8 hours or so for ticks if you have them in your AO.  We take my kids (2 and 4.5) camping regularly, and in some spots we've found a half dozen ticks over 2 days just on one kid.  We check them when waking up, after lunch, and bedtime.

Backyard camping is all you need to do for a kid that age.

Just remember, at that age, the trip is all about the kid...
