I have not been camping in over 30 years, and I guess what was camping is now called car camping where you drive to the campsite and pitch a tent, or overland to it. We will have our dogs with us so I was looking at 8 person tents. we found the queen size cot and air mattress from Coleman. She doesn't want to sleep on the ground. I am making a wishlist on Cabelas site. I am not sure what to look for in a tent. I know we want to be able to stand up in it I guess, and waterproof would be great.  Here are the 4 Which ever we get I will buy optional rain fly and anything else needed.

The best one you can get on your allotted budget should do you fine from Cabela's. Get a can or two of the tent waterproofing spray, use it long before you go to the campsite to allow it to soak in and also air out any fumes.

So the Cabelas brand is good to go. their new line really doesn't have a lot of reviews and I will feel bad about dropping 350 on a tent and find out its shit.

I always like to find reviews, but most tents in that price range will be a decent family type tent, it will not be a 4 season let's go to the top of Everest tent but it should survive years of regular camping outside of tornado ally

Thanks yeah it will be for summertime camping only. My wife won't be caught out there in the winter or when its cold.

This is the one we saw and liked.   And this one because of the size.    No reviews for either.

You can save yourself a lot of money by getting a Coleman tent.  If it's just summertime camping and you're not super serious about it, a $200 tent should be fine.

Hell, I had an Ozark Trail tent we kept for a few years before a storm killed it.  I didn't waterproof it though.

ETA:  No tent that I know of is very dog-proof.  If your dog(s) are rowdy, you might not want to spend too much in case you lose your investment the first night.

This for sure. I also have an Ozark that I've had for years, lost the rain fly for it. The type of tent I put up in the backyard all summer long for the kids and they will last a year or two

An 8 person tent is huge. I think you might be over estimating the size you need. Setting up a tent that big in the dark while its raining and your girlfriend is telling you that your doing it wrong while your yelling at her to "just hold the flashlight so I can see what I'm doing" is NOT fun..  Asks how I know.

I'm of the opinion that a tent is for changing clothes and sleeping (and other activities that evolve laying downish). Everything else, your outside of the tent. My girlfriend and I sleep in a 2 person comfortably with my 30lb dog. I'm not saying you need to look at tents THAT small, but maybe in the 4-6 person size. Looking at smaller tents will let you use your same budget to buy a higher performing, higher quality tent.

Backcountry Edge has a 20% off sale going right now. I just looked, they have a 6 person Kelty Outback tent for $183. Looks like a good place to look at some tents.

Anyway, not sure what I'm trying say... I'll just shut up now.

Most 4  persons tents Will be 9+9 with a height of 5ft . Give or take.
We have a Coleman similar to the hooligan. It's a discontinued model. Looks like a big igloo.
Anyway.
Wife..11  yr ..old and dog with gear and it's cozy.

Unless you have 6 dogs and must have a nylon cabin  4 person should work.

REI has a bad ass tent/cabin...looks like a mini airplane hanger lol . Can't recall the name

You may want to consider a tent with a vestibule. Leave the dogs in the vestibule and you two can sleep in the main tent.

Not that we don't love our dogs, but the inside of a tent gets dirty very quickly with muddy dog prints. Or you can use the vestibule to wipe their feet off. It allso give you a place to take your shoes off and leave them before you go in the tent.

Beyond that I can't really help. We use a Ledge Recluse which is fantastic for the money, but smaller than you are looking for.

I picked up the Coleman Evanston Screened Tent last year for car camping and it has worked out well so far. The small screened in "porch" area is perfect for dogs and a staging area to undress and so on without having to be outside or bring in dirt and bugs. The interior is not really for six people, more like five once you put a queen mattress in there and some other stuff.

I have the Kingdom 8 with footprint and garage. It's a hell of a tent. My family is just myself, wife, and 6 y/o daughter so the size is way overkill, but we really appreciate the space when camping for a week straight. We use 1 room as a bedroom and the other as a kitchen/dining room/living room. The garage is then used for storage and gear at night and a covered play area for my daughter during the day.

I also have a similar sized and shaped tent from Ozark Trail. It was much cheaper at around $200 if I remember right. We got about 3 trips out of it before seams started to tear and zippers failed. I replaced it with the REI Kingdom 8 and do not regret it.

Go to Costco and get a coleman 10-person tent and a coleman self-inflating air mattress.  If you want to go all-out, pick up a Camp Chef while you're there.

That looks pretty decent -but if there were details on the size and number of dogs I missed it.  I wouldn't count on dogs staying inside a screened vestibule and/or not tearing it up.

This is a heck of a tent, with a high roof and very vertical sides:

I really like Kelty products as well.

What type of camper are you?  If you're a car camper then you can afford something heavy.  I have a large and heavy tent for car camping and then a ultralight one that I take backpacking.   I'm an REI member and their prices are cheap but they have a really good return policy for your to test out gear and at the end of the year, you get a dividend check!

This looks great, A vestibule is a must to leave our shoes out there. we have a 80 lb lab, 20 lb shih tzu, and as of today a 40 lb boxer german shepard mix that is 5 months so she is going to get big. and we will be using cots also wife doesn't want to sleep on ground, that is why I am looking for a larger tent. Cabelas have a lifetime warranty on their line and I did see a few Ozark trail tents on amazon that look huge. Also I don't want to call it car camping I prefer overlanding, and I am sticking to it. I have a custom roof rack on my Xterra and was actually looking at RTT but then the dogs would cry and I don't want to hear that shit.

here are a few that we are looking at.

This one, it doesnt need a rain fly they say.

And the ones I linked above. The coleman seem nice that they are waterproof so when I spray them down there is even more protection.

You want a good rain fly. Single walls will leak in continuous rain....
Reason I've stayed away from any cabin tents.

Also if your running cots be wise to add a foot print and even another tarp inside to help keep wear down on your floor.

The foot print goes under the tent. If there isn't one on the market for your tent. Make one.
The other I'd put in the tent under your cost or make some pads for the legs.

We have the Evanston and put one under our tent.

If you're putting those big dogs and cots inside, It wouldn't hurt to have one inside the tent too.

Op, you want a tent that's mostly mesh for air flow. As far as waterproofing it, just get a tarp that will cover it completely and can be staked down even over the rain fly. As for the dogs, get a two room tent and you should be good to go. You don't want them on your beds...

Wenzel is one step above Ozark trail junk from China Mart. Aka junk.
Only tent they have that ever caught my eye was their solo/2 person starlight, gazer or whatever it is. Basic single wall pup tent.
      Its a 30$ tent.

Read your pink. Water collected at the pup on that edge and broke the pole. Right.
Reason I've never bought a cabin style tent. I grew up camping in a canvas Hillary, cabin tent. Water always collected there at the edge..but that's when tent poles we're pretty much polished emt pipe lol

      I passed..purchased an exponet(Coleman) inyo 2 .
Back in 04' have not had a single issue with it.

I knew it wasn't a high end tent. I just wanted something for car camping that was big enough people could get away from bugs/sun/rain. I didn't expect to summit Everest with it - I did expect it to handle an average rainstorm. I was just shocked to hear the same company that produces Kelty also produces a tent that "isn't meant for rain" and when it breaks and floods it "performed as expected". I can't patronize a company that does business like that.

FYI - I also have an Ozark Trail tent I bought a thrift store for $4 that has been used for dozens of nights of camping and has held up to winds and rain, and even some snow. Just because something is inexpensive doesn't mean we should expect it not to hold up to basic use.

Sorry to sidetrack the OP. I just wanted to state that I didn't recommend dealing with any of the Kelty brands as they treated me poorly when their product failed.
