On Saturday I did a loop in Shenandoah NP utilizing Wildcat Ridge Trail, Rip Rap Trail, and the AT. I also did an in and out down a .9 mile (one-way) spur trail just get a little extra mileage in. Total mileage was 11.24.

The mapping in my S Health app went nuts about half-way through the hike but I think it was just the mapping aspect as the total distance seemed correct based on Hiking Upward's page (http://www.hikingupward.com/SNP/RiprapHollow/they show 9.5 miles not including my 1.8 miles from the spur trail) as well as my own figuring using my maps and the trail markers. Also S Health will give you updates every mile that includes altitude data. This data was correct throughout the hike so I don't think I lost satellite.

Hike map from hiking upward (spur trail can be seen at bottom at about 8 o'clock:

I've been doing Philmont prep hikes with my boys scout troop....until I blew out my anterior talofibular ligament last week (grade 3 complete tear after a misstep coming down some steps). Hoping like hell it heals. Will know in a few more weeks, then hopefully back at it in a couple of months.

My wife and I hiked the Superstition Mountains today while our daughter was in school. We did an in and out called Second Water Trail. Garmin says it was 7.33 miles. It was windy, cloudy, and we had a steady mist on us for hours straight. Not what we are use to here in Arizona so it was a nice change.

I will join in on this.  I am up just over 10# since October. IMHO that puts me about 20# over my comfortable weight.  I really need to start covering some miles again because I pilot a desk for a living so...

Last year I probably covered over 300 wilderness miles.  Maybe close to 400 but I never tracked it or added them all up.  Most of my millage comes from hunting season.  I probably do 100 miles a year in the Rockies and another 100 in the Adirondacks.  That last bit usually comes from my mile a day when I get a chance backyard hike.  So if hiking the small mountain behind my house a few times a week counts, then I am IN.

I get really un-motivated in the winter.

Did the Austin/Furnace Mountain Loop trail in Shenandoah on Saturday. (Hiking Upward link: http://www.hikingupward.com/SNP/AustinFurnaceMountains/ - I didn't go to the summit of Furnace Mt. though)

The S Health app went nuts again. I think when one descends into valleys or hollows and the satellite reception goes in and out the path drawing part of the app can't take it and freezes. The step counter still seems to work fine though as it jives with my maps and with hiking upward. Next week I will try a different app.

Total distance: 11.86 miles

Hiked Mt Moosilauke yesterday... great hike, but COLD at the summit.   Looks to have been about 11.5 miles total.   I usually use All Trails to track my hikes, but My phone went from 70% to 0% in a hurry at they summit.   I suspect it couldn't handle the cold.  Left me pretty frustrated though, almost to the point of looking for a dedicated GPS.

A blow down that provided a great view:

Holy crap that's gorgeous.  I wish we had snow like that here.  Just one time this year would suit me.

Anyways, completed my second hike this year.  Just a small quick up and down a local mountain that allows hikers.  The views are wonderful, but not the right time of year so I won't bore you with pictures.  I'll say that this hike is always a tough one, there are so many rocks to navigate up and down and over, both sharp and dull. I almost took a spill coming down and my foot got lodged between two rocks and stuck there.  Hiking with a bone spur in your ankle joint doesn't help much either on this terrain.

Chestnut Top Trail, Great Smoky Mountains National Park - 4.3mi one way

Pretty day, although I had to go at a faster-than-I-liked pace to get back before dark.  I made a near fatal mistake of leaving my headlamp at home so I had to book it.  Thankfully there was a full moon.  My ankle is killing me now, but a steak and some Beam will help.  Only 3 people on the trail the entire time.  Not even any animals except one bird.  I love ridgetop hiking.

But, with my bone spur on my ankle, I was able to find that 6mi is probably my limit for a day's hike at the moment.

The ride home was gorgeous

After missing last week I decided to make up for it and went both today and yesterday. Both hikes were in Shenandoah.

Yesterday I did a loop leaving from Crescent Rock Overlook heading south on the AT. I picked up Cedar Run Trail and took it down the mountain to a trail that connected to White Oak Canyon Trail. From there I took White Oak Canyon all the way up to and across Skyline Drive where I picked up the AT again at the horse stables. Took the AT back to Crescent Rock Overlook.

ETA: The down hill on the Cedar Run part of this hike is pretty abrupt. I've done it before and always enjoy it but this time I ended with blood blisters in both big toes. Never had that happen before.

Saturday's total mileage: 10.28

Most everything is still nasty brown down here. I think I was just in an area with a lot of pines, moss, and rhododendrons.

Nah, I missed this weekend. Had a nice shooting outing instead.

I am looking forward to daylight savings time in a few weeks. Going to try to do some longer hikes once that gets here. I am a bit over halfway done with the AT in Maryland (its only about 40 miles). I want to finish that this year.

Saturday I did an out and back on the AT from Smith Roach Gap to just before Pinefield Gap. This is in the southern section of Shenandoah. Was incredibly cold due to the wind. 12.03 miles.

S health actually function correctly and made a nice map and cross section - I think it hates going down into hollows which this hike had none of.

Did the Chestnut Top Trail again today, taking my cousin out hiking for the first time.  He's hooked now, which is awesome because now I've got somebody to hike with.  It snowed on us for about half the time we were up and, although there wasn't much views due to the snow clouds, the scenery around the trails was great.

One more hike and I think I'm done for the rest of the month, haha.  I was driving in the TN Valley earlier today and went up a hill and saw this magnificent view before me, so I dropped everything and went up to go hiking in the snow.

Took a trail called "Crooked Arm Trail" and I learned why they call it that.  It was straight up and down, only about 200yd collectively of level terrain and less than half that of opposite. (if you're going up, less than 200yd of downhills)  Anyways, the first thousand feet climb were muddy as hell and going down was a pretty tricky hazard.  My legs are still sore.

I could catch glimpses of the higher mountains, and I wanted to go there but the roads to them were shut down.  Still, 3,200 ft wasn't bad.  It was so cold that the mud I collected on my paints going up turned to ice, lol.

This is the only view overlooking Cades Cove.

Funny story.  Going up, I ran into a few people.  One group was a dad and what I figured were his two sons.  We stopped to talk and I said how this hill was kicking my butt, and that everybody coming down looks much better off.  The younger dude goes "well you look great".  And there was this awkward silence while I tried to 1) figure out what he meant, and 2) tried to formulate a response.  He just stood there looking and didn't laugh or anything, so I said something and kept moving lol.

So far this year I've done around 30 miles in eastern OH. Not much elevation change or anything.

Did around a 10 mile loop today in GSMNP. Climbed up Greenbriar Pinnacle, a little under 5k ft. It was an off trail/bushwack for the first ~3.5 miles. Went to an old homestead site with a small gravesite. Then it was a steep on-all-fours climb up to an area known as the "Cat Stairs," which is basically a steep knife edge climb using rhodo for handholds. Got to the top where there is an old fire tower site. Then hiked back down an abandoned/unmarked trail that's still seemingly well traveled. Came out toward the bottom of the Ramsey's Cascade trail.

It was nice doing some good elevation, since I haven't since early November. Start my big hike very soon.

Here's a pic of Greenbriar Pinnacle. Bushwacked up the steep right slope.  Other mountain is Mt LeConte from near the top of Greenbriar.

Its a Samsung Galaxy app called S Health. There are other apps like it in the play/app store though if you don't have a samsung. Just  look up hiking apps.

I have found that if you are in an area with hollows or otherwise steep terrain the map feature in S Health doesn't want to draw your route on the map correctly. However it does not seem to affect the actual step counting or total mileage. In fact it seems super accurate after comparing it by tediously measuring out hikes in google earth using its measurement function.

Only been doing a few odd miles here or there in the backyard when time allows.  Some on snowshoes some on X-country skis.  Weather has been really crappy the last month.  It has been cold many days and I have been really unmotivated.  I probably only did 15~20 miles in the past two months.

Anyways I have some plans to start working on, and building a few different hiking trails on my property.  I am hoping to use my 40 acres to put in roughly a 3 mile loop of sorts, along with a secondary trail that cuts the loop in half down to a mile or mile and a half.  I currently just walk the seasonal road that runs straight through my property, I want a little more scenery/ adventure for my morning/ daily hikes.

Very cool that you have that land to use.  I prefer to hike in the cold down here because there's zero chance of ticks and mosquitos, plus the humidity puts me in bad moods.  I'll probably drop off for a while in the Summer, unless I find some really cool places to hike, and it seems like there's an endless list of them around here, luckily.

I've been wanting a chest rig but no way I'm paying $100 for a canvas bag.

Some dude just hiked all 800 miles of trails in the Smoky Mountains in something like 3 months.  Apparently there's a challenge and the record is 2 months.

Buy a used Tact tailor mini mav. Slap a admin pouch on the front.
Instant chest fag bag to put a pistol and other kit.

I've never 'gotten' the idea of a chest rig. Probably because that was VN or ChiCom stuff only when I was in the green machine with an Alice pack.
Not saying that it doesn't work, just that I cannot wrap my mind around it for the hiking stuff that I'm doing.

ETA: BDU's were 'new' right before I got out.

Did an in and back hike on the AT from Swift Run Gap to just before the AT ascends Lewis Mnt. (pretty sure that is name) for 15.02 miles. It was a very nice day but was overcast. This is a pretty boring part of trail without much in the way of scenery. Thus the pictures aren't great.

Not for everyone, I was really hesitant at first, but, to each is own.

For me, when I drive, or travel to trail heads with the wife for a couple hour hike (maybe in the Jeep or maybe on the KLR) I have my wallet, keys, etc but have no need for a day pack.
Drives me crazy running even a couple items in my pockets when covering miles at a decent pace.
Think: keys, a pocket knife, wallet, flashlight, lighter, handkerchief, and/or whatever other incidental items I might be carrying for a few hours on the trail.

I was running a small waste pack prior but found this works better for me, but again, to each is own, I have no reason to toss insults for differing options.
