Hi All,

Looking for a basic campsite tent for my 3 yo daughter and I... and occasional maybe the wife... lol

Under $200.  Water proof with fly.  Something we can see the stars with at night.

April through November.. nothing extreme.

Regards

Basic Coleman tent will work for that. Cheap and you can find a good size.

PIcked up a brand new coleman at a yard sale for $10, exactly what you described...

Try CL or drive over to walmart for what you seek.

You can most-likely find it cheaper somewhere else.  Try overstock.com too.

- 6-man because if you bring the wife along you'll want the extra room.
- Instant tent because if you're out by yourself with the kid you'll have to do twice the work and will be too tired to actually have fun otherwise.

I like both of my ALPS Mountaineering tents, a Jagged Peak 2 2-person 4-season and a Lynx 4 4-person 3-season. The Lynx 4 end walls are mesh from the middle of the walls upward, and it's very roomy inside. I've never gotten wet inside it.

I'd recommend a 4-6 person tent, if you won't be hiking with it.
For a comfortable night, average 1/2x the number of people it is designed for.

Coleman, REI, Kelty, or some others will serve you well.  You don't need to go extravagant or $$$ on this one.

These days, $200 will get you a decent tent.  I'd stick to one of the major manufacturers if I were you.  Even if you have to go to the used market.  Most of them make a pretty good variety of tents from basic car camping houses to expedition worthy bomb shelters.

Whatever you decide, since you're on the east coast, get something with a FULL fly sheet.  Nothing is more pitiful than seeing some new campers trying to rig a tarp over their crappy tent in the middle of a thunder storm.

edit.  the REI Halfdome has been a solid contender for years now.

Any known outdoor company will sell you a good tent for $200.

Just stay away from <$50 stuff.  They generally are not waterproof in the least.

Thank you all for the info.  Years ago I had a basic Eureka that was ok.  I like the Coleman and others you listed.

We still use a Eureka that is probably ten years old.  We are looking into actual trailers now for the next few years though.
