Well, topic pretty much self explanatory.  All the outdoor watches I see are big, bulky, and for me, a pain.  I guess I don't need all the fancy features, but anyone have a good suggestion for a low profile watch for outdoor applications?

Timex Expedition.

Simple.  Lightweight.  Small.  And cheap.

I've beat the living shit out of mine for three years, and it keeps on ticking.  Only problem is the "leather" band was crap.   Replaced it with an equally inexpensive NATO strap, and  I've been totally happy.

a couple of my favorite outdoor activity watches:

Seiko SKX series. Before the giant fashion watch craze these were considered large, but in todays terms I'd say they are easy to wear. You can pick em off of ebay for cheap too.

If you want smaller/slimmer, have a look at the Seiko 5 military styles, also decent watches at a good price, and found on ebay:

I have this citizens watch: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EQS1JW/ref=s9_hps_bw_g241_i4?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-9&pf_rd_r=1PAZRW83G8RTZP7KTRCZ&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1666904102&pf_rd_i=405377011

Honestly, its one of the best field watches out there for $100. I replaced the band with a thicker leather one but thats all personal taste. 100 meter water resistance (so you can swim with it), solar powered (so you dont have to change the battery for the next 20ish years), simple, easy to read, and it has a date counter. If you are looking for an analog I'd go for that one. Its also very compact and classy looking.

Timex Ironman. Still around $30 at Walmart with 100m water resistance, backlight, stop watch, timers, alarms. Pretty tough too. Batteries have always lasted me around 8 years or so.

Much better than that stupid solar G-shock Riseman I bought. 2 months out of the 1-year warranty and the stupid thing kept resetting itself despite lots of time in the sun. Piece of crap for a $200 watch. I'll take my $30 Timex and reset the time myself twice a year. The barometer/altimeter/atomic synch wasn't that useful anyway...

Triple sensor watches? You aren't missing out on those features...I have a casio protek, and they only thing that really works with any sense of reliability is the temp sensor...

That watch looks really nice.  One question though - how is it solar powered?  I don't see any sort of a solar cell on it.  Just curious how it works....

It uses a very small solar cell (almost like the ones found on a calculator) that is set into the face, when the light is just right you can actually see it. I've had mine for 3 years now and have never had an issue with it losing power. Just the act of wearing it around charges the battery. Its a very high quality watch for not much money. I am probably going to purchase a second one for a backup.

Hideous and works fine... Overstock.com still sells them.

The alarm is attached to a rotating bezel which is dirt sensitive compared to a digital watch but better than my Luminox diver because the parts just don't fit as tightly together.

Timex expedition was my previous watch.  Had it for years, was #2 of its type.  As noted above, replace the junky band with a good one.

or

A Gshock if that is not too big for you.  Current watch is a Gshock Solar.  They are very tough, and great bands.

I could be very wrong, but I believe the Citizen "Eco" watch uses a motion driven energizer for the internal battery.  No solar cell; just wear it.  They have been around for a while, so the technology is sound, apparently.

This.  The batteries last longer than the band for me.  I've never had any luck with multi-function watches.  The Ironman does everything I need and for the price, I won't cry if it gets broken or lost.

Casio Sport Pathfinder, slim model.

Not as big as that picture makes it look and very stylish in real life.  Full features, I beat the snot out of mine and it's still 'ticking', although I managed to scrape the glass up on a rather unique rock face dicking around 3 months after I got it.  Other than that, the titanium model looks great and is light weight and basically bullet proof.

Solar powered for the win, just be sure to turn off the feature that turns on the back light when you look at your watch if you wear it while sleeping.  If you work a job that means you don't see the sun much, it will burn the battery down in no time.

Another vote for the Timex Expedition - I have the Velcro strap version:

Simple to use.

I made the mistake of buying a Casio World Watch. What a pain in the ass to set just one time on it:
