+1 for Fiskars.  You can get these at most SEARS stores and for the price you get a quality piece.

+1 on the Fiskars/Gerber axes/hatchets. I've had the Gerber Back Paxe (8.9" long) for about 15 years now and its still going strong. I abused it a lot when I was in Boyscouts.

I'm thinking about getting the Fiskars Super splitting axe because I just can't find a good, quality maul around here anymore.

If the super splitter is anything like the 23.5" splitting axe I've got, be very careful with it until you're used to it's quirks.  The one I have is hard to judge.  Either it's going to get stuck in the log, or it's going to grenade it apart so hard and fast that the axe goes sailing through it with enough force to really mess something up on the other side.  No middle ground.  I'm more used to conventional axes and mauls that'll slow down a lot more on the way through.

I bought one of these ( http://www.estwing.com/product.php?product_id=1600 ) a few months ago from the local hardware store.
I don't have anything bad to say about it really, I was out in the woods a lot this past spring/summer too. It's sharp and sturdy, well balanced.

This hatchet was actually like RAZOR sharp out of the package...so much so that I cut myself while handling it.

Me : You guys have any axes or anything like that?
Clerk : Sure! right over here.
Me : Wow, this is pretty nice * blood randomly starts pouring out over my hand and the axe *
Clerk : Shit, I think you cut yourself, you need help?
Me : I guess ill take it...

I just picked up a marbles belt axe no.9  at a local gun show for $20. I really didn't have any reason to pick it up, but the scandi grind was interesting. Never knew anyone made a hatchet like that. Any feedback on this hatchet? I will sharpen it up and try it out next weekend.

The "patron saint of canoeing", Bill Mason forbade hatchets on his trips.  He regarded them as most useful for chopping off fingers.

I bought this one while waiting for the Penobscot Bay to get in stock.  For $32 delivered it's a heck of a little ax.  Reviewed pretty well on Amazon too.

That is effing awesome.

It's important to have a hardened poll if it's to be used for hammering.  Many an older axehead will show you why.

I have a SOG tomahawk, and I love it.   If I am out backpacking, people will laugh and giggle and point at it . . . until they need to borrow it!   Keep it sheathed and strapped on the side of my ruck.

I'm well pleased with my Estwing Camper's Axe, model E44A. I haven't used it much yet but the couple of times so far have me convinced a big knife is no replacement for a small axe. It is just so much more efficient for chopping small trees and splitting firewood. It also has the synthetic grip. It cushions heavy blows and I'm confident it won't have the delamination problem often found with the shorter, leather-gripped Sportsman's Axes. If this Camper's Axe is half as good as the 20+ year old Estwing hammer I have, I'll be well pleased.

Here is a hatchet I designed and made. The head and point at the bottom are heat treated 4130 steel and the handle is black anodized 6061-T6 aluminum w/ a knurled grip.

My hatchet fetish. Picked all these up for $2 or less each at auctions. Had a Winchester I gave $2.50 but sold it for $45

L to R
small plumb
small plumb
large plumb I really love this one with its original handle its a prized possession
no name used and abused trapping and working on tree stands
Sandvik Sweden
old Craftsman more of a half axe had a perfect handle laying around and just got it put on.

Not shown is my Norland it stays in my truck. A few years ago I lost the one my Grandparents gave me for my 9th B day so I Picked up another at a flea market for $6

That would be a very light axe, the only thing that I see is that the handle does not have much support in the eye.

I haven't taken it camping or anything, but I know it shreds pellets and punches neat holes in 55 gallon drums.

I have had one for about 9 years.

It is a useful tool but still no substitute for a good axe.

My newest addition...

This thing just feels right ..  splits wood good  comes with a decent sheath for it, But I'm thinking I'm gonna make a Kydek Sheath
for it ...
I've had Fiskars and Gerber Hatchets and Axes ... I  broke the Hatchets due to over strikes spliting kindling..  But the Fiskars Axes
is still going strong.. I like all of Estwings stuff ,  their big Campers Axe is Just Awsome... Just wish it had the stacked leather
washer handle...

Just stumbled on this.  Looks like a useful version of some of the stuff SOG makes.

Neat bit of gear except for the $300 price tag...  I would love to throw one of those in my Jeep for unknown situations but not for that much $$$$$$$

Anyone seen a Norlund Voyager before?

I bought it for my son. The head cost $3 at the flea market with a crap handle. I put it on a boyscout axe handle so the whole thing is under $11. I love the shape of the head. Very light and cuts nice once the edge was rehabilitated. It took a while on the belt sander to fix the hammer damage on the back side of the head. Some bluing was the final touch.

ETA: recommendations for a sheath are appreciated.

Has anyone tried the Mora axe?  I saw them here and it was the first time I've even seen an axe made by Mora.

Wild, I love Mora knives, but for axes and hatchets I only like either wood or full metal handles.

I would still like to get my hands on one and try it out though, if it is as tough as those little knives it is probably worth the 50 bucks.

Good basic edged tools from El Salvador:

Condor Tool & Knife

Condor Axe & Hatchet

Obviously not the same attention to detail as Gransfors Bruks, but an excellent tool at 40% of the GB price.  (I own both products.)

Condor Axe:
1045 High Carbon Steel
American Hickory Handle
Leather Sheath (very nice quality)

I was trail riding in the Ocala NF this morning.  Wind had blown down a pine, across the narrow forest road.  Too high to drive over, too low to drive under.  My 19 inch Wetterlings made quick work of it.  Took about 6 hits.

Nice True Temper! I found a double bit Kelly Works True Temper at a flea market a few weeks ago and picked it up for $10. If you want an addicting hobby, try to look for the old axe heads and restore them to the former glory. There's something about a made-in-America piece of steel that is sweet to own.

Bought one of those Condor Tool and Knife Greenland Pattern Axes about 3 years ago, Amazon Warehouse buy, IIRC paid $34.  Nice tool, it has done everything I have asked of it.  Amazon has them now for $57, i'd say thats a fair price.

The "Marbles" brand is made the the same company. It is the same product just different name and at a cheaper price.

I was aware of the "Marble" brand hatchets, didn't know they made axes or that they were made by Condor.

Maybe they'll make a new Game Getter, they've got the name for it.
