WARNING:
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, in BATF Ruling 81-4, has ruled that auto sears are conversion kits and fall under the registration and other provisions of the National Firearms Act, and as such are classified as machine guns. It is unlawful to manufacture a machine gun, and information provided in this book is for educational purposes only.
As stated by the author:
The purpose of this small book is to clarify and explain the procedure and parts needed to convert a semi-automatic AR-15 to be a selectable, fully-automatic weapon. Needless to say the actual conversion would be in violation of federal and various state and municipal laws and the reader is so warned.
While the author does not wish to get into a lengthy discussion on the pros and cons of various gun laws, it should be pointed out that had our forefathers not broken a few laws, we would still be an English colony! Also, you cannot be arrested for possessing knowledge. It is in this context that this information is presented.
This book offers a pretty complete overview of what's required to convert an AR-15 to full-auto. It's complete table of contents is listed here:
Table of Contents:
- Introduction
- Fundamentals of Full Automatic Conversion
- M-16 Vs. AR-15 Parts
- The Drop-in Auto Sear
- Drop-in Auto Sear Drawings
- Conversion Update
Because it was printed in 1981, some of the material is dated, especially the lists of parts suppliers. Other than that, some of the laws pertaining to conversion kits and specifically drop-in auto sears have changed, but the technical content is still valid.
It does focus on the drop-in auto sears and almost completely ignores the regular auto sears, and thus the machining needed to make those function.
For those that are interested in how your AR functions, and how the M16 functions, this book is a good read.
