Carbine Class Gear on the cheap?

Hi All,

A friend gave me a cert for Front Sight a while ago and I have an opportunity to use it this coming year. I would like to do the 4 day Rifle class, but I don't have a ton of money for gear. Could I get away with a web belt with 2 magazine pouches (total of 6 mags) and a camel back? Thanks for any suggestions you can offer!

+1

Back it up with some tactical type pants with lots 'o pockets if you're not going to run a dump pouch. You will need a place to stick mags after tactical reloads.

The pouches will be fine. You might want to reconsider the Camelback, since you can hydrate on breaks. If you read up on hydration and saturation, you really need to load your body with water a day or so before the class. Depending on the time of year you'll be at Front Sight, this may or may not be a factor.

Can you ask some friends to borrow their gear for a few days? Do you have a sling?

Check out the threads about preparing yourself, your weapon, and your gear for the class. Also maybe read a few AARs to get an idea of what to expect. You'll get more out of the course if you're not fighting your weapon or gear.

Looking forward to the AAR! Stay safe.

Use what gear you normally would use. Why train with a PC/Vest/belt rig if you'll never use one again? Stowing mags in pockets is completely acceptable provided that you are not trying to put 10 mags in the pockets of jeans. If your most likely purpose is SHTF, then wear normal clothes, grab your rifle & go bag, and train with it.

USE YOUR NOMRAL GEAR.

This is actually the gear I have right now and I would rather spend money on ammo, training, and seeing what problems I may encounter in the classes, before I start spending on the blackhawk vest that might not exactly meet my needs

Cheapest way to try gear is to do it for free, by borrowing stuff from your buds. Do this way ina dvance of the class, to work out the bugs of what works for you.

Cheap piece of great gear is the Maxpedition Rolly polly. No need for an expensive dump pouch.

I have been through 3 classes with one of THESE with no problems.
Not the best but gets the job done.

Thanks, I book marked that. Is it heavy? How well does it distribute the weight? Does it breathe?

Maxpedition RollyPolly on list

Holds six mags and additional gear on the molle. I find it fine to run in classes A full water blader evens
out the front heavy load of ammo. For 40 bucks I like it. Plan to upgrade one day but in no hurry.

Nick,

I think you would be served very well with an Eagle M4 Chest Rig from SKD. You wont have to worry about elastic loops and it is great for classes, especially since its K.I.S.S. It costs more than the rig on Cheaperthandirt however it is good quality and it will serve you better in the long run. It holds 3 mags, and if you put a mag pouch or two on your belt for speed reloads you will be all set. Even better, the mag pouches are kydex lined, easy one-hand operation to place your mags in your rig, and they retain well. You do not need to have a ton of magazines (for example 10) on you during training courses. Plus in the future if you want to throw on a few more MOLLE mag pouches on that chest rig you can.
