 That's two for flinching...

Ok, so I have a flinch. I think its rather bad. 7 out of 10 shots hit the 8.5x11 sheet of paper, I figure that is effective for self defense. The problem is, 3 of those yahoos are not hitting the paper and instead would hit Lord knows who/what. I have a suspicion they are missing low and to the right as that is where most of my shots end up. I suspect that I'm anticipating I'm anticipating the recoil and pulling to the right & down (I'm right handed). So, what am I to do? The gunstore guy said that I should balance a quarter on the top of my slide & dry fire until the quarter doesn't fall off. Any more suggestions?

That would probably work.

A drill you can try on the range: have a buddy load (or not) a round in your weapon, hand it to you and you attempt to fire.

^^^^

Do the dry-firing with a quarter, then do what the above poster has mentioned.

You'll be surprised how much you jerk the pistol when there's no round. I catch myself doing it sometimes, too, and go back to dry-firing a good bit before every mag.

I use empty shell casings rather than quarters, but its the same thing.

You need a mag half-filled with snap caps and half live ammo.

and maybe an hour of range time with a good instructor.

You can do this by your self with multiple mags, just mix in some empties at random places in your mags, mix 'em up and go. Use this to practice your malf drills at the same time.

Dry fire alot. I never saw the need for the balancing act. You can see if your gun is moving when you dry fire. Just make sure your gaddam gun is empty! I run a 1/4 peice of rope ~ 14 inches long down the barrel and out the mag well. The slide still functions and you can still dry fire (unless your gun won't fire magless).

Shoot a .22 cal when the recoil starts to bother you.

As far as the empty casing, are we talking about balance it vertically? I've been doing the quarter drill a few times and it seems I'm not flinching with the quarter on there. It hasn't fallen off yet.
