What to shoot at 1000yards
A buddy wants to go to a 1000y range in a few months. I want to go but dont know what I should shoot.
Here are my choices.
AR15
Remington 700 - .243
DPMS LR308 - 16" barrel
M1 Garand
What would you guys shoot?
take the Remy and the Garand and see how you do.
garand is about your only accurate hope.
buddy had a modified .243 from SWAT.
@ 1000, dont' think so.
If the .243 has a fast enough twist barrel to support the 115GR DTAC's and you reload... than the 243. Chances are (if it's stock) it doesn't, and the garand would be a better choice for the ammo it would be able to shoot. What kind of sights are we talking about? Scope with adjustable turrets might be much more viable at 1k if you haven't shot that far yet (vs Irons... not that you couldn't do it with irons).
Edit: didn't fully read what you had there... I'd bring the LR308 also... should have enough juice to get you to 1000 with some 175GR match ammo. AR would too if you reload and have a barrel that's able to stabalize the higher VLD bullets (IE: 75GR AMAX and above).
If you have a 1x8 (maybe 1x9 its iffy) .243 barrel get some Berger or JLK VLD 105s and load them to (2900-3000fps).
You will get to 1K with no problems,,,I run a 6 Br. with 105s @ 2800fps and do fine at 1K with it.
The VLDs are depth sensitive so I would start about 3 thou. off the lands and go from there.
If you dont handload your kind of limited,,,,so you might want to start.
Good Luck & have fun.
Put together a load for the 243 with the berger 95 VLDs and you will easily get to 1000 and well beyond that. The Garand would also get there pretty easily. The DPMS with 155's or 175's will get there as well.
Bottom line, take them all and make a challenge out of it. Man-sized targets with the Garand would be the most challenging and most fun. The 243 will be easy if you do your part.
DPMS with 155 (maybe 175) should get there.
