Course Title: Edged Weapons Defense
Course Length: 16 hours over two (2) consecutive days each at eight (8) hour intervals
Course Date: March 20-21, 2010
TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE
To provide physical skills, familiarization and confidence in personal defense against direct assault at extreme close quarters by attackers wielding fixed, folding, straight and curved edged weapons.
Training Abstract: Resulting in certificate of completion, this two-day (16-hour) hands-on program of instruction provides the essential training skills for operator survival in the event of a life-threatening attack at conversational ranges by an assailant wielding an edged weapon.
First day scope of study focuses on fixed and folding straight edged blades and includes Stable Fighting Platform, grips, operation and defense against committed and uncommitted attack at close quarters including the anatomy of edged weapon close-quarter engagement, carry and deployment, empty hand response for both low and high-line attacks as well as reactive response and surviving on the ground with a knife.
Second day scope of study focusing squarely on the unique curved blade, includes a brief lecture on history of the curved blade and it’s modern application, proven techniques for modern carry and deployment, how to grip and manipulate fixed and folding curved blades, how to effectively employ both the cutting edge and point, operation in immediate threat response and techniques to ensure your personal safety in a close quarters altercation against an overpowering assailant and finally disarming an assailant wielding a contact weapon (such as a knife, screwdriver, baseball bat, tire iron, handgun, etc.,) utilizing your curved blade.
About Your Instructor: Foremost edged weapons subject matter expert (SME) Steve Tarani is a recognized educator in the professional training community. Based on real-world operational experience, he is a full-time trainer, with tremendous background in the area of edged weapons and defensive tactics. Tarani possesses unique knowledge and information valuable to the enabling of deployed personnel in the areas of personal safety and rapid engagement force options utilizing edged weapons, Tarani is the published author of seven books, dozens of DVDs and trade journal articles. As an advisor to US FBI, US DEA, US TSA, US NSA and other agencies, he is additionally the author of the first book published on the use of curved edged weapons. Currently sworn in the state of California, Tarani is additionally the architect of the recently commissioned International Chiefs of Police Model Policy on the carry, deployment and usage of knives by federal, state and municipal peace officers. Author’s byline: Steve Tarani is one of the rare and fortunate individuals who trained extensively in the Filipino, Malaysian and Indonesian traditions of Kali, Eskrima, Arnis and Pencak Silat’s rare edged weapon systems and specifically the Karambit (curved blade of the Indonesian Archipelago). After close to seven years of training, he received his graduate instructorship in Lembang, West Java directly from his Instructor Guru-Besar Herman Suwanda in 1996.
Student Gear Requirements: At least One fixed blade (can be a butter knife) and one folding knife. Comfortable attire suitable for rigorous physical activity Notebook, pens, etc., Still cameras OK, however NO VIDEO RECORDING PERMITTED Prerequisites: None Delivery Safety Info: No firearms will be allowed in the training area No ammunition will be allowed in the training area All students must divest themselves of any explosive or incendiary devices prior to training Cell phones must be turned either in the “off” position or switched on “vibrate”
Student Tuition: $250 per student. A deposit made payable to “Boone County Sheriff’s Office” of $100 is required to hold your seat in the course. The deposit in non-refundable if the student cancels within 21 days of course. Balance is due at class. Background check requirements are also set forth in the course application.
