Whats with the neoprene gun covers?

Went to an IPSC match yesterday. first one in a couple of years. Saw many guys who had the compensated, dot sighted 28+1 round 9mm guns had these things that looked like a scope coat, but it covered the entire holstered gun.

What the purpose of those? I'm guessing to keep dust off the gun, keep sunlight from fading the custom paint job or keep your competitor from scoping out your gear? But those are just guesses.

Mainly to keep the gun clean; also protects the gun/optics during rain.

Nothing like the anti-social to sling mud where possible.

Used to keep dirt, dust and crud out of the gun. Why have the gun get excessively dirty when you don't have to. BTW, guys with limited and tacticool guns use them too.

It's to keep the dust out. I use a shower cap on mine.

Are they really tightly fitted like bullseye 1911 used to be? Would dust from being carried openly in a holster cause stoppages? Or is it more to keep it off the lenses of the optics?

No offense was intended. Its the first time I've seen the gun covers (or whatever they are called) and thought the IPSC sub-forum would be the place to get a straight answer. I could have posted it in GD but it would have been endless stupid comments. So i thought it would be better to ask here.

Open and limmited guns are expesive and yes some ranges are "dirty" enough to cause a gun to fail. The covers also keep the rain and such off the c-more lens. I'm among the shower cap guys.......mine is pink with flowers. Sponsored by my wife you know

My guns aren't super tight, but it's still a good idea to keep as much dust out as possible. Here in West Texas and E. New Mexico, where I shoot most of my matches, it's usually pretty dusty and windy. If I'm shooting in a more grassy area I usually don't worry about it.

Open Slides have a lot of excess metal removed, in dusty places dirt can and will get in these places wich can lock the gun up. I carry a shower cap, but have yet to use it. Dust is not a prob in the NE.

I always tease them and say it is probably the only thing holding the gun in the holster

With open guns looking more and more like swiss cheese covers are a valuable thing especially around here with all our dust.

Real IPSC in the Philippines? Cool.

As was said, Limited guns sometimes are covered, too. Lots of 6" limited guns with swiss cheese holes in the slide. However, my beat up old Para does not have problems with dust.
