Trying to start a college rifle team, have some questions
I'm currently a member of the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M University. Recently a few buddies and myself approached our Commandant's office with a desire to start up a Corps service/high power rifle team. We were told that if we could find the money, the location, and people to shoot on and coach the team, we'd be given the endorsement. We found a local range that is full distance, we've got enough experienced juniors and newly interested shooters to make the team, and we've even been able to find the path to a little money through the Texas State Rifle Association. I'm interested in sponsorships. I've seen all of those junior teams at perry wearing sierra shirts and have heard about other sponsorships; whether it is money, gear, or discounts on products. Is it as simple as just calling up the public relations office of the companies we're looking at and asking if they'd be willing to sponsor us? Are there rules (NRA, CMP, NCAA) regarding sponsorships and college teams? Would we shoot as juniors, military (a few of us are in the National Guard), or do college teams fall in their own category? I know that this has historically never really been successful but I'm hoping to field a good team that can compete and (hopefully) win on a state and national level. I sincerely appreciate any help you can give me,

also go to student affairs and see you can get some of that student activities money by starting a "club" there is a process to follow but they should be able to toss you some money towards it. Also look up some of the defense contractors for funding.. i.e. bushmaster, rock river, etc...
KM2013,
I may be able to help. Can you email me at agmarine07 at gmail.com?

i shot smallbore and air rifle at VMI for about a year and a half and had to do service rifle on my own time because the rifle coach didn't think that we needed another rifle team. good luck to you and hopefully you'll get some sponsorship. TSRA used to have a pretty good service rifle team (and they probably still do) so they should be able to hook y'all up and at least help you get started.
Post this question on usrifleteams.com and see how it goes. The best of the best in terms of competitors and coaches are on there al lthe time.
Good Luck and Godspeed,
