Another thread reminded me of the 40 round pmags. Is there a firm release date for these yet?
I don't think there is. I was hoping to get some before my upcoming deploymnet, but it's not looking like it'll happen.
Magpul did respond to the other thread and stated they are still in the works but did not post a release date. I don't blame them. Who wants to be committed to a promised deadline if you don't have to? I asked someone at their booth during the 2010 SHOT show and was told Oct. 2010. I didn't bother to ask this year. All we could do is wait but luckily there are other options out there.
Got to see the Surefire 60rd and 100rd magazines at the AAC Silencer Shoot last weekend. Good stuff. The 100rd version may cause some issues when going prone, but the 60 rouder looks like it would be perfect as a monopod.

that is the best option at this point but I was wanting to try a factory 40 round pmag
In my view, the time for the 40-round PMAG has come and gone, and I see no reason to pine after one. There are other equally viable options out there. I run the C-Products 40 rounder (actually holds and runs with 43 rounds). If I need a few more rounds, I have a PMAG/Nordic extension (48 rounds) and a California Comp Works PMAG coupler (60 rounds, though you can't shoot prone with it). The Surefire is also late, and I am inclined to let them work the bugs out first, but eventually it will give us a prone-friendly 60 rounder.
Here is a photo of the CCW coupler in case you aren't familiar with it:

Nothing yet. When it is out Rob and I will probably be using it at the next major 3 gun however.
I've been waiting for it too and been hoping to slap the Nordic extension on it to bring it to 58 rounds.
Hopefully they release it soon. This is the first thing that popped up on Google:
