I am looking to get into 3/Multi gun shooting. I am leanign toward a Mossberg 930. I was wondering what model was the prefered starting point. I want ot be able to use it while hunting if needs be. Here are the ones I was looking at

85238 Field/Deer Combo
24" Rifled Slug Barrel and 28" Vent Rib Barrel.

85360 SPX 8 Shot
I like the SPX because it is ready for a beginner 3 gunner out of the box, buying a 28" barrel will run about another $150.

85325 Field Security Combo.
18.5" and 28" barrels. No Mag Extension.

I know there is talk of Mossberg comming out with Out of Box Ready 3 gun model but that is a while down the road.

Thanks

I'd go with with the 930 Turkey in black with black synthetic stock. 24" barrel with a vent rib. Cut the barrel down to 21-22" and get a set of Briley chokes. Weld up the carrier, put a longer tube on it and mod an Arredondo carrier release button to it. Done.

Unless you have a real want for an extra barrel, there's no need for one.

Ive been using the SPX and love it, I especially like the sights that come with it. Yes there was an issue originally with the front sight being crooked, but I think that has been resolved. And if you get one like that, mossberg will take care of you.

I just got the SPX a week ago....and sent it back on Tuesday. It had a crooked front site, and the front two screws holding the rail looked crooked. When I took the rail off, the holes were burred. It kinda looked like a retarded monkey drilled those holes. Overall, I was pretty pissed! But, I'll wait and see how it is when I get it back before I start really bad mouthing the SPX.

If you can find an SPX locally, I would get one that way. I got mine on GB, so I couldn't see any of the problems.

I got the 28" waterfowl model. I thinks it's around 24" now as I had it cut just behind the ports. The +5 tube I put on it extends just past the muzzle. I've got right at $600 in the gun as it sits now. The Mossberg 3-gun model is rumored to be $1300 when it comes out.

I just got the gun and fired it for the first time last weekend. Tomorrow I'll use it in a match and see what happens.

24" black turkey. Call Edna at Mossberg and get a non ported 24". Sell your ported barrel. Add a Nordic +4 extension and your good to go.

this is what i am about to do.

I would very strongly recommend against the SPX. A lot of people say ghost ring sights slow them down on the fast hoser stages, a bead front or conventional rifle sights are much faster. But the biggest problem with the SPX is the barrel. It's only 18.5" and has no choke, so you're going to have problems knocking over steel with it. I've seen a lot of people have problems knocking over poppers with open cylinder bores. Also, the SPX only holds 7+1 from factory, and if you add a longer aftermarket tube it will stick out past the end of the barrel. You still have to do work to the SPX to get it competition ready, so you might as well start with a cheaper model and do it right.

Buy the cheapest 930 you can find, with the barrel length you want. You'll need to have it cut down to get rid of the ports and you'll need it rethreaded at that time. I wouldn't bother buying a 2 barrel package unless you have a need for the second barrel. I paid $380 on gunbroker for mine, new but with a scratched forend that I sanded down and refinished. I added a Nordic tube, cut to 22" and rethreaded the barrel, welded the lifter, and opened up the loading port. For sights I dovetailed in a set of 10/22 sights since I can't hit crap for slugs with a bead, but a regular bead or clamp on rifle sights would be fine for most people. I also added a Choate charging handle and oversized safety, but those weren't necessary, they just look cool. I have less than $600 in it and it's a great gun. Last year was my first year of 3 gun and I used an 870. Last Sunday was my first match with this gun and it was awesome. One easily cleared stovepipe jam, but I'm hoping that's just because it's not broken in yet. PM me if you have any questions, I really think this is the best deal going for a 3 gun shotgun.

This is the way to go. My set up is very similar, and will soon be adding 10/22 sights,as it shoots slugs way off at 75 yards, low and over 6" left at 50 yard

Talked with my FFL and I can get the Deer/Field 930 for $475. I asked about the Turkey Model but he hasn't got back to me with a price. So the plan is to buy Model 85238, order $180 of stuff rom Nordic, to include +4 Extension, Follower, Clamp, and Charging Handle. Sell the Slug Barrel or trade it to Mossberg for the 24" Non Ported Barrel, then have a good to go shotgun. I will see what I can find on the lifter saw one that was $45 it was already modded. So before the sell of the barrel I will have about $700 into it. I am looking locally but I can't find a store that has the 930 in stock.

I am just not sure if I can take a file to open the loading port. I know that I will want to but it will be hard for me to start.

If he can get a regular 930 with a 26 or 28 inch barrel at a cheaper price, DO IT! Cutting it back to right behind the ports and having it threaded back to the Mossberg chokes is perfect for three gun use. It also saves you the price of getting chokes. A basic drill tap for a front sight. Guncat squared up my barrel cut and threaded it for $65, between that and the parts you are getting you'll have almost the perfect shotgun. You can spend so much more on a shotgun, but the question is why? Benny Hill has a gleam in his eye every time someone even mentions a 930. He's loving this 930, yes he makes it even better, but even the regular 930 kicks sand in the others faces.

+1 on Guncat, he did my barrel and he does great work at a very reasonable price. He can rethread it for the factory chokes, so you won't need to buy new ones. Quick turnaround too.

Here's his website:

I would definitely recommend taking a file to at least the front of the loading port. There's a huge overhang that traps your fingers. File it back to where it's just even with the mag tube. Even if you don't weld up the lifter this will help a lot. Without doing that I don't think you can possibly load the 930 quick enough for 3 gun. It's a simple mod that anyone can do.

Definitely just get the cheapest regular 930 your dealer can find. No sense in paying more for a combo model unless you want that second barrel for hunting. The plain old field model is just fine.

24" w/ Nordic +4

It shoots a few different slugs great.

One note on the 10/22 sights, I thought the dovetail was a little deeper than I wanted to go into the rib, so I filed down the base of the sights to about 2/3 or 1/2 their original size. Then I cut the dovetail into the barrel by hand with files. It's not hard if you have experience with a file, but if you've never done it before I would practice on a junk barrel until you're good at it, or have a gunsmith do it for you. There are instructions on the internet detailing how to do this. Just a warning, as I don't thing the 10/22 sights are useable as is.

The Turkey Model is $25 less. So I will go with the combo. I am sure that I can sell the other barrel for more then the difference. Some one said that mossberg wouldn't trade straight for barrels. If not the I will probably sell the slug barrel then buy the 24" non-ported then sell the 28". I have a 835 for when I need the extra 4" of barrel and 1/2" of shell. Getting this project under $600 will be easy. Possibly under $550 if I play my cards right. On a side note went to the range to try some simple multi gun stuff abnd I will need a lot of work to get good. It will be fun playing in the match's.
