Suppressors
Are registered sound suppressors legal in 3 gun?
Thanks!
Yes sir.

Why would you want to run a suppressor? I won't want to risk damage to it by tossing it muzzle down into a barrel during a transition.
I think it places you in the open division. I don't think I would want to use mine in a match.

Yes, but they usually cause more problems than they solve. You still have to wear ear-protection, they don't mitigate recoil as well as a compensator, and they often cause difficulty with the shot timer, getting it to pick up the shots. Many shot timers are adjustable for noise levels but that doesn't guarantee you will get through your run and get an accurate time.
Suppressors are very cool and they have a lot of utility, but not much at a 3-gun match.
I know Travis Gibson runs one on his AR, but not sure what has done to get it to run.
I know the RO's usually have to get right up on him when he is using it.

Not totally true. In IMGA matches, yes. USPSA allows the use of a suppressor in Tactical Rifle and Limited division as they are not considered compensators and...a good suppressor is MUCH better than any compensator on the market with regards to muzzle control.

Barry Dueck, director of the Surefire suppressor division, has said that in a recoil testing fixture that the suppressor was only 40% effective in reducing recoil to where the compensator was 56% effective.
An opinion at best and controlling muzzle rise and recoil reduction are completely different. Shoot an open 38 super vs. non comp'ed super with major pf loads. Recoil, energy to the rear, will nearly be the same. Muzzle rise will be MUCH different.

Suppressed guns are hard for timers to pick up. I have even seen some miss pistol caliber carbines. If the sensitivity of the timer were better, you might pick up shots from adjacent bays. Oh, and a suppressed gun through a port is almost impossible for a timer to catch (BTDT, held the timer).
