So if you had to handle 140rds of shotgun in a single stage, how would you do it?
A local club is having a 140rd Iron Man shotgun match next weekend. 1 stage 140rds. You've got to crawl through a small tunnel to make sure your stuff is secure. How would you handle that many reloads?
I figure I've got room for 22rds in belt carriers, 9 on the side, 9 in the gun. That gets me to 40. 100 to go. I was debating picking up two cheap 50rd bandoleers. Any other bright ideas?
Oh yeah, any ideas on how to no need a new loading thumb when it's over?
A Saiga with 14 magazines?
Do you wear a chest rig? I've seen shotshell holders that will mount on them, but I doubt you'll have enough space for 100 rounds. Probably the cheapo bandoleers will be the best way to go.
Also, that sounds like an epic competition. Post video!
Regarding the thumb destruction, I actually load my 12 ga pump with my pinky. I don't flip the gun over. I keep the shells in my left hand and feed them into the tube with my pinky finger.
Messenger bag.
Maxpeditions big ass version, or
Oldschool Alice Fanny Pack on a shoulder srap.
I have a couple of M-60 bandolier bags that I use for stuff like that. You have to load one by one, but you'll be doing that
anyway unless you strap a whole bunch of shell carriers across your chest.
If you're shooting open a Saiga and some drums would be nice.
I think bandoliers would be a good cost effective choice. The one I have holds the shells securely.
Lol - I'd take 140 rounds in a messenger bag - a normal belt full of empty shell holders - get through the tunnel, drop the bag in the middle of the course - load the caddies, and go back to replenish when I'd shot all the way through my belt.

I would look for something like this as well, something you could sling over your shoulder, think about what hand you want to load with and have the strap adjusted so you can reach it easily with your loading hand.

This is a good idea! You could also have two 50-round bandoleers in there, loaded and ready to go. That way I could just throw them on and use them.
But from what I've experienced, I think having ammo in a bandoleer is nice, but getting to all of it (like the ammo on the back") is a huge pain. Having 140 shells in your bag may be the best way to avoid this. Or have some way to put a box of shotgun shells into a holder on your belt.
Something like this:

If you got a few of these, you could have full boxes on your belt with all the ammo arranged how you need it. When one is emptied, just replace it with another box from your messenger bag.
I would wear two large dump pouches filled with shells and grab from them as needed. Might also add an SOE Micro shotgun chest rig.
Start with this ... 56 rounds, plus the six in the gun... and add some dump pouches full of shells......
If they keep their orientation - neat.
Murphy might intervene though.
I expect he will, but I'll hope for the best.
After some reflection, I would probably save my 150 or so rounds (carry extras, because you are gonna drop some), and just watch.
But if I had to, I would probably stack them in 25-round boxes in the bag. That way, I could pre-stage them in the orientation I want, and they will stay in that orientation. Maybe tear the lids off the boxes. Empty a box, toss it out.

I think having the in boxes oriented the way you want them is a REALLY good idea
Trojan 19,
Can you post an AAR and some pics of the match so we can all how this problem was addressed by you and your fellow shooters?
I would load my buckshot and slugs into my vest and then put birdshot in a dump pouch.
Definitely post pics.
I'd love to see how the stage is setup and what kind of challenges you have to face.
Sounds like it will be interesting.
Good luck!

Are you in NOVA or SEVA? The match is in Chesapeake. If your in the area you should come just to watch.
It's all bird shot for this match.
I'll try to get someone to video it, but I'm not promising anything.
I'll try to restack in the boxes tonight and see how that works.
You could take everyone's shotgun with some ammo and post it empty at each target...Each shooter has to run from target to target, when they get there they have to safely load and engage, then safe the weapon and move on to the next target. That would really level the playing field as everyone is using the same ammo and the same guns. Imagine having to manipulate 10-14 different shotguns, with some single shot and double barrels added just for fun....
oh yeah....

Hopefully, someone has a hosercam.
This sounds awesome, I need to convince the people who run our local multigun matches to do this.
I don't even want to think about how long it would take to reset the stage after each shooter . . .

Well, its a 1 stage match. Getting people to stick around to the end would be the trick.
Yeah, the more I think about it, time would be a problem. It's not like a normal match where you split into squads and run several stages concurrently.

VA Beach...booked for this weekend though. Where is this match? BW? NCRR?
ncrr
How did this go?
That is not a shooting contest that is a who can carry the most ammo contest. I'd have your buddies follow you along with caddies ontheir belts. Grab extra rounds off your buddy.
Sorry for the really late ARR. I tried my damnedest to get the video off my droid, but I can't get it to load to photobucket or youtube. I got pissed and forgot about it.
The match was pretty awesome. I used the bag I showed earlier but I did put the sheels back in boxes all oriented the same direction. It worked OK. I stil got some that were miss oriented when I grabbed them. It was funny because I would stick a miss aligned round in my mouth while loading the others. I actually expected loading that many rounds to suck, but it wasn't to bad. I did ok compared to the other guys shooting semis and pumps but got my ass kicked by the big spinner at the end. I really should have used more choke. We were also limited to 7 1/2 and 8 shot. I had mostly 8 on hand and didn't have a chance to get more 7 1/2. Live an learn. If the shoot had been at Blackwater, I would have used #6 or maybe OO.
I also learned that I will never waste my money on a Sagia. There were 4 different guns and only one of them ran good. One of them died 30rds into the match and had to be hand cycled for every shot. I didn't know how much work you have to put into them to make them halfway decent.
Thanks for the report. It would be fund to try something like that.
(FYI: The video on the Droid usually comes off in a format that needs to be converted before you can post it. At least that's been my experience.)
Thanks for the AAR. Hope to start making some of the matches in our area this Summer.

Could have just been the ammo they were using.
My Brother has a Siaga 12, and the first time out, it was stovepiping left & right. He was using the 100 round bulk pack Winchester from Walmart. He then tried, that same afternoon, the Federal bulk packs, and it ran fine, no issues.
ETA: He was also using the same gun & mags, and shooting it the same way, so the ammo was the only variable.
Also, If I had to do this match, I would have used the 25 shell elastic belts with the buckles. I would loop them through my regular belt, and then as I need them, unclip them off the belt, quickly wrap them around my waist and clip it closed, then loaded off the belt. When I was done, undo the clip, let it fall and go to the next ammo belt.
