Hey I have an AK in 5.45 and I was wondering if I would be able to shoot it in any 3 gun matches. I dont have the money for an AR but I would be able to barrow one if I have to.

Yup...if you just want to have fun and get some good training/practice it will do just fine...you will just lose a little time on mag changes

If your shooting steel targets 545 will destroy them .

You most likely won't be able to use your 5.45mm rifle in most three gun matches because all 5.45mm ammo contains steel and will not be allowed by the range masters.

Ok. I heard that hornady was comming out with some bullets for it so I would use them. My cousin has an AR with an EOtech and I can out shoot him at 200 yds with the 5.45 using iron sights.

You could buy Wolf 5.45X39 ammo for the matches. Supposedly the commercial made stuff doesn't have the steel penetrator core.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but has anyone used a 5.45 AK in a 3 gun match with steel? I have yet to find a 5.45 round that a magnet will not stick to. Even the Wolf and Silver Bear stuff attracts a magnet because the jacket is a "bi-metal" jacket. I would love to use my AK in a 3 gun, I just need to find ammo that they would allow.

BTW, I do have some of the new Hornady V-max rounds. They do not attract a magnet, but they would be a little pricey for competition.

If the match will allow it just use the Hornady V-max rounds on steel targets and the bi-metal jacket rounds on the rest. Another possibility is pull a bullet and cut it in half to show the match director there isn't a steel core. I'd contact the match director first before I showed up at a match with a 5.45 rifle but they might accommodate you.

The bimetal jacket stuff really doesn't do anything to steel that we have seen at local matches.

The problem for match directors is how can they easily verify everyone's ammo is not armor piercing? A magnet test is the easiest thing to do.

Check Steel after each shooter. If steel is damaged. Shooter is DQed and responsible for steel replacment costs.

Then there is no point in using steel targets, just use paper. The reason stage designers use Steel targets at 100-500 yards or further is so hits can merely be recorded rather than scoring and pasting targets every time. Even if you had ATVs or Golf Carts to check down range targets after every shooter, it significantly lengthens the amount of time required to run the stage. At some matches like RM3G where targets are across a valley and up a mountain it would simply be impossible; others like SMM3G would require stopping shooting on 1-2 other stages to go down range. Checking steel after every shooter would be a logistics nightmare.

Even russian stuff with just steel shell will damage most steel plates.
