I know very little about 9mm AR's. A family member wants an ATI AR that takes glock magazines.
Are there other higher quality choices out there or is this it?

i think the three choices are, glock mags, one that uses converted UZI mags, and one that takes grease gun mags. they are all alittle different, and some use mag blocks, or a diff hammer.

out of them all i know the system that uses UZI mags isnt the easiest....but the UZI mags are the cheapest..easiest to get ahold of in NY and are hi cap pre ban.

check out the AR variant forums...theres bookles of info on 9mm ARs. Ive been toying with the idea for a few years to build one but never did.

Olympic Arms makes one that uses glock mags.

K9 - GL 9mm Glock lower

During the ban they also made pistol caliber uppers that could be used on a standard AR lower, using preban WWII 32 round Sten gun mags and a mag block. Not sure if they are currently produced.

Though prices seem to be up this year, as of last year you could still get a preban TA S/N Colt 9mm for under a grand.

The Colt 9mm ARs will take the modified UZI mags; the mod takes about 2 minutes. RobertRTG.com has UZI mags for under $10.

If you own / carry a Glock, then the 9mm AR that takes that mag may be of interest. Otherwise, stick with an UZI mag-based design.

And, as always, patience is a virtue. I picked up NIW UZI mags for $6 each, preban Colt 9mm 32 Rd. mags for $30 each. Know what you want, set your limit, and search hard.

I recommend going with the Uzi mag style for a number of reasons.

First, they are compatible with Colt's 9mm uppers. I have used them extensively in a 6450 model and a 635. They require minimal work to adapt (literally a 1 minute job with a dremel tool).

Second, they are much tougher than glock mags. Preban uzi mags tend to be over solid steel construction, and take a beating as well as rough cleaning which is important if you shoot in a sand pit like I do.

Third, price. Uzi mags are $10 or so; preban G19/17 mags are 30-50 bucks. Preban 33 round glock mags are well over $100 and hard to find.

Fourth, capacity. Uzi mags hold 25 or 32 rounds (20 round mags are out there too, but are expensive). IIRC G17 is 17 rounds, G19 is 15 rounds, and obviously 33 rounds for the 33 round mag. For the cost of one 33 round Glock mag, you can have 10 - 15 Uzi mags converted.

Fifth, Uzis! If you ever get an Uzi you can share the mags between the guns.
