Is it legal in NY state to have a 14.5 or even shorter barrel if you pin a muzzle brake on it to reach 16" ?

Are there any advantages to go with a 14.5" over a 16" beside from what I can see to be just looks?

No advantage, and ballistically you loose ~100fps of velocity, and gain several decibel's of sound (louder)

minimal loss really. Sound output isnt significantly more, being its damn loud either way, and myself, I have MBs installed anyhow....YHM comps are VERY loud

i prefer 14.5, for the primary reason of being a bit shorter.

I had a 14.5" barrel with a pinned brake.

It was shorter and somewhat lighter.

I liked it and have kept it now that I'm not in NY anymore. I think a perm pinned FH would be nicer for acoustics as I've got a mini-Y comp on there now

I guess it depends on the brake. I took 2 ARs out the same day, one with the Wilson Combat tactical brake on a 16", and a preban with a 15" and a A2 hider. Can't tell a difference, they are both loud.

why stop at 14.5"? I have a 11.5" with a fixed 5.5" FH.

that just seems like a ballistic waste. you lose 5 inches of rifling that could be stabilizing the bullet and increasing velocity.

yep, not just that, your not saving anything with the OAL.

14.5 + perm affixed brake = 16.1 say overall.

having a 11 inch bbl is silly when your 5.5 inch flash or brake doesnt do any better a job than a 1.25 inch one would.

Yeah, but what about loud & flame?

I'm well past the point of guns having to be practical, I want some fun ones too.

My buddy has one. Sweet Jesus it brings the thunder. It is uncomfortable to shoot next to him

Haha I had an old preban ea , car stock, 11 or 10.5 inch bbl. Big flash hider. Was truely a fire breather....especially at dusk

Yeah, but your missing the point... Patty has a 11.5

I shot with him last spring at a MDTS carbine class and didn't find it any louder than anything else out there. Then again I'm young and listen to loud music

I can't speak from experience, but maybe weight savings? Better handling? I know it's the same OAL but it may have advantages.

I'm a fan of 14.5 Middy's myself.

I think the people who had the comps had louder guns. The reason for my 11.5"+5.5" FH is it is a CQB firearm. It has a T-1 micro 4MOA, and a light. It is my HD gun. I have ARs with 16" barrels, it is nice to have something different. It is a 1/7 twist chrome lined barrel so it should last me some time :)

All the hand wringing and over velocity loss is amusing. I guess all the detractors of sawing an inch and a half off your barrel must all own 20 inchers as the 400 FPS loss is just too great to shorten your weapon? Who/where are any of you reaching out and touching someone where a 100 FPS will be the deciding factor?

Hint:

Out to 90 meters it doesn't matter one lick wherther it's a 14.5" or a 16". And that's if you plan on using M855. There are better round than the military's spec'd round. At the distances you'd be using it(home defense) would most likely be under 30 meters. So what are you worried about?

If we could own SBR's in this Commie sh*thole of a State I would love to have a 12.5" in 6.8spc (with a can would be my ultimate home defense rifle). Given the 16" barrel length requirement 14.5" with a permanently attached brake (or FH if preban) gets you closer to the magic 16" length than a 16" barrel with muzzle device. I did at one point own a post ban Bushmaster 16" barrel with bare muzzle that was pretty handy. The extra 1.5 inches of barrel doesn't sound like much but it does effect handling especially working around cover like corners or door frames. I don't at all get the point of an 11.5" barrel with 5" brake though.
