Hi all, I will be visiting the hill country area of Texas in August, any suggestions as far as gun shops worth visiting? Anything else? i'm already planning a stop at the Pacific War Museum in Fredericksburg.

Enchanted Rock - huge granite dome outcropping, camping and hiking
Cooper's BBQ in Llano
Real Ale Brewery in Blanco
Fredericksburg is ok I guess for an afternoon. Mostly just main street with shops selling overpriced crap. Museum is worth seeing though.

Edit - be prepared for 100+ temps every day

You might go up the road to Enchanted Rock. In August it's going to be pretty toasty so do it in the morning. The Pacific War Museum is a very interesting, solemn experience. You may have the honor of being around some remaining WWII vets that are drawn to it. They also have a Jap midget sub that was retrieved from the Pearl Harbor attack.

If you head out 290from Fredericksburg toward Johnson City, hit the wineries. There are quite a few good ones. Becker is highly recommended. Also suggested is a stop at the LBJ ranch. Go on the self-guided tour. The highlight is an "up close and personal" tour of the inside of the house!

Sorry I can't help on any decent gun shops.

In San Antonio, look into Dury's and Alamo Tactical. Austin/Buda check out GT Dist and Cabelas.

About 22 miles from Fredricksburg is Hye. They have the Garrison brothers distillery there. I recommend the tour. Nice place. Nice people.

If you are going to be in Fredericksburg, Cactus Jack's http://www.texasjacks.com/ It is mainly Cowboy oriented, but they do carry some modern stuff as well.

Depending on what days your trip covers, there might be horse racing and the Gillespie County Fair

That area is highly populated with rich yuppie types.... Austin area bleed offs...

Gun shops in Kerrville are high as hell - anything worth having is out of line with the rest of the world.
I actually saw a well USED Remington 870 for 650 bucks.

Wow, I had hoped the area was far enough out from Austin to miss most of them. Got enough here in NY, along with hippies, occupiers, hoodrats, etc.

You can take em for a loop if you know what you are doing.
Buddy traded a box of aluminum G3 mags to the guys at
the pawn shop under the pre-tense that they were worth about
$10 a piece, got a CZ52 and some ammo out of the deal for a
bunch of 1 dollar mags.

I picked up an Arisaka Type I from them for $100 even, and
traded a P-1 +$50 for a G26.

It's not just the carpetbaggers. Kerrville is kind of a hunters headquarters for exotic hunting ranches in the vicinity. They sell a lot of stuff to people who fly in from all over the world to hunt. That's why camo hunting clothes, sunglasses, boots are all MSRP or higher.

These are upscale hippies. Prius owners, lots of bicyclists, etc. They won't bother you. Ton of people on motorcycles. There's some decent wineries in the Fredericksburg area. Stop at Alamo City Cafe for a burger late one evening, listen to music, ignore the group smoking weed in the parking lot, and watch the bats leave the nearby cave. The Cabelas in San Antonio has a nice Fine Gun Room. Get some TexMex at La Margaritas after you visit the Alamo.

FYI. It can be kinda warm in August.

You've got a gift for understatement. Last year I don't think we had a day without a triple digit high temp that whole month. Hopefully this year will be a little less hot and dry. And I normally like hot and dry weather.

I wasn't trying to scare off the pasty Yankee. We had 100 days of over 100 in Dallas last summer. The highest temp I saw "unofficially" was 118. I love hot weather but even last summer tested my resolve.

Got back from Kerrville in August, expecting relief in Dallas

We were at the distillery in Hye yesterday, talking to a couple who were from Cali, who had been recently transferred to Austin. The wife said the transition from Cali to Austin was really smooth because Austin is so much like Cali. Mrs. Winmag looked at me like this . I just smiled and nodded.

ETA: The gift shop at the Shiner Brewery has a 51% sign on the back wall.

They don't even sell beer there.

Oh man I'm sorry, that smooth transition comment would have, without raising my voice but with a cold look of disdain, brought on a "thats because Austin has already been overrun with carpet baggers from California. Is the porn industry coming too?"

This is one of those comments I'm going to remember.

ETA: Maybe we should make t-shirts and sell them... In Austin.

Austin

Almost California

Cabela's is in Buda, not San Antonio. Shop owners in Fburg are kind of asses IMO. For a place where tourism is their life blood, they seem to be snooty and not want people in their shops unless they are buying. To be honest, if you are looking for a real TX Hill Country experience, I'd skip Fburg and go visit Blanco, Johnson City, Burnet, Inks Lake State Park, Longhorn Caverns, Kingsland etc.

If you go through Johnson City, be sure to grab a burger at the Chrome Cactus.

My mistake. I was thinking of the Bass Pro off I10.

If you like golf definitely this area. We had a place in Horseshoe Bay for years.

I looked into Burnet online, and Marble Hill looks like a nice town too, as well as Florence. I definitely want to visit Best of the West in Liberty Hill too. This is a vacation/ recon for a retirement move out of NY in five years. I guess I'll be carpetbagging like those people from Cali, but only because everything I've read about Texas is positive. Taxes, 2A, death penalty for scum, Class 3, all a win. Not that keen on the poisonous snakes all over, but that's an excuse to shoot more.

If you find yourself in Llano, Stonewalls in downtown Llano has excellent N.J. yankee style pizza. Plus you Have Cooper's BBQ on the other side of the bridge. By the way, Llano is full, I bought the last house on the hill there yesterday.

It is a short drive to Junction Tx. From Junction got south on HWY 377 about 10 miles and you`ll cross the llano river. Go another mile and you`ll cross it again. Stop. Put on bathing suit and get in water and cool off. You`ll need it.

Marble, as locals call it, is ok. We've got both a Wal mart and a Dollar General. Wirtz dam use to have some of the best white bass fishing in the area.

Llano is deep in Texas / Comanche history. The Spanish probed the area looking for silver and there is supposedly a lost Spanish mine somewhere on Packsaddle Mountain. In 95' Packsaddle was where the last Comanche battle against Rangers in the Hill Country took place. Heading north in town crossing the Llano and looking downriver, one of those white two story structures was a rail road boarding house where John Dillinger supposedly hid out.

Lol, I did check the Walmart store locator to see where they were. Target, too, for the pharmacy.

You could meet me outside Fburg on a ranch and actually shoot guns instead of looking at them. No open season in August and we don't see any hog sign recently so it would be steel, rocks, and paper (maybe a coyote or raccoon).

ETA. I just realized I'll be heading up to NY in August to skip out on some of this heat - what week(s) are you in TX?

While the Texas Ranger Museum is cool... Be aware that Waco is an hour and a half drive or so north of Austin, and Fredericksburg is an hour or so west of Austin... so it is a bit of a hike in between them. Google maps says a bit over 3 hour drive.

I'll be there the first week in August, but I'll be with the wife and kids. My twelve year old loves to shoot, but my wife and my ten year old do not, so I will have to pass. However, I'd like to sincerely thank you for the invite, it's very generous of you to extend yourself for someone you've never even met. :)

John.
