There's still work to be done. The bill has to get through a committee. Then it has to pass third reading in The House. The danger is that the leader of the Liberals will whip the vote, This will be political suicide for Liberal rural MPs. So, I suspect a hit of the flu on that day.

It will pass in the Senate.

Then, we can rejoice.

Well, the Libs are going to whip this vote now....

Its still possible, the NDP are allowing a free vote and perhaps some of the blue party will abstain.

Lots of work to be done, hopefully in line for a summer vote (3rd)

I'm starting to think some of Iggy's counterparts set him up by convincing him to whip the vote..

That's right you [Tony Montana Accent] fucking Canuckistani [/Tony Montana Accent]. You better apologize to me.

So basically to get a simple American view from this.... Your Parliament is currently dominated by Liberals and you're hoping that the Independents vote along with the Conservatives so that they will have a larger majority in total then what the Liberals have?

Also does your Parliament work the same as the British system with a House of Commons and a House of Lord. Commons can be voted in and Lords are birthrights or some such nonsense.

Canada's parliment functions with a house of commons (elected members of Parliment) and a senate (appointed by PM with regional representation). The house of commons is currently in a minority state with the Conservatives ruling, the senate is controlled more by Conservatives (Conservative Party of Canada or CPC) as a simple majority.

The total number of elected seats currently in the house of commons is 308, of which the Conservatives occupy 144. The Liberals occupy 77, the NDP (far left) occupy 36, and the Bloc Quebecois (don't even ask about this group of crazies) occupy 48 (2 independents and 1 vacant make up the rest). By simple numbers the Conservatives do not hold a majority and can be defeated on any vote if enough of the other parties members decide to vote against the motion.

The bill to repeal the registry has split parties, and if allowed to vote their conscience it could be a very close outcome. The Liberals have decided to whip the vote, meaning party members must vote along party lines (oddly the Libs are for the registry...), but the NDP and Bloc will not be whipping the vote, so members con vote as their constituents wish. In previous votes, some Liberal and NDP members voted to repeal so it will be interesting to see how these members vote this time round.

So your Upper Chamber is not open to general elections.... much like how the US Senate was before the 17th Amendment.

Before the 17th, Senators were elected into office by each State's Legislature. After the 17th, it became a general election open to the public like how the US House of Representatives is.

The current Prime Minister (CPC) has been trying to reform the senate by requiring an elected senate with fixed terms, for quite some time. But until just recently the senate was skewed numerically in favour of the Liberals. It has been nothing more than a partisan patronage appointment to date, and I for one would welcome an elected senate. Currently these people are appointed (with no accountablility to anyone but their appointing party) and can remain til age 75.

the senate needs to go..the citizens of Canada are the only checks and balance the gov't needs...of course that would involve MP's voting for their constituients..not their party..
