Steps to take, and Forms to fill to bring restricted weapons into Canada...
I sent an E-mail to the Justice Department of Canada (they cover firearms up here) asking what steps I must take to bring an AR-15 into Canada. I think there's a 3 round clip limit for a restricted firearm. This in combination with all of these requirements doesn't seem worth it...

Mr. Xxxxx:
Thank you for your correspondence.
The Colt AR15 semi-auto rifle is considered restricted in Canada as it comes
unmodified directly from the manufacturer.
Importing Firearms - Canadian Residents (Individuals)
You are required to have a valid Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) for the
type of firearm being imported; non-restricted or restricted, prior to importing the
firearm into Canada.
Once you have the PAL, the firearm can be imported by following these guidelines:
DESCRIPTION:
A Canadian resident who holds a valid Canadian PAL and wishes to import
non-restricted or restricted firearms from outside Canada must fulfill the
requirements of the Canada Firearm Centre, as well as those of the Department of
Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT). The requirements are:
CFC requirements:
Register the firearm before importation, and
Allow sufficient time (30 days) to have the firearm verified after the registration
certificate has been issued.
DFAIT requirements:
An International Import Certificate (IIC) is required to import firearms.
BATF requirements: (Only when firearms are imported from the United States)
Contact the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (BATF) in the US to inquire if
there are any US procedures to follow as a Canadian Citizen when importing firearms
from USA. The Canadian individual wants to ensure that no US regulations or laws
are contravened. The BATF telephone number is 1-202-927-7770.
SCENARIO # 1
A CANADIAN CITIZEN WANTS TO IMPORT A FIREARM TO CANADA IN THE NEAR FUTURE
The individual must have a Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) for the type of
firearm(s) being imported, restricted or non-restricted.
Contact Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) and inquire
about the International Import Certificate (IIC), whether a restricted or
non-restricted firearm is being imported. If, depending on the situation, such a
permit is required it will be issued by DFAIT under the Import/Export Act. The
number to obtain the permit is 1-800-267-8376 or (613) 996-2387 if calling from
outside of Canada.
The form required for the registration of a newly imported firearm is Form CAFC 998E
Application to Register Newly Acquired Firearms (For Individuals). The application
must be completed with the full description of the firearm i.e. make, model,
calibre, barrel length, shots, serial number, etc.... The form can be downloaded
from the Internet at www.canadianfirearms.com. If you do not have access to the
Internet, the form can be ordered through our office. Please send the completed
application to the address provided in the instructions. Please indicate if the
firearm is being held at Canada Customs.
A letter with the registration certificate number will be issued to you. This
letter must be presented to the Custom Officer, as well as the PAL, when picking up
the firearm at the border.
The letter will also explain about the 30-day period in which the firearm needs to
be verified, by an approved verifier, and further explains to return this
information to the Registry. The applicant can call 1 800 731-4000 to obtain the
name of an approved verifier in his/her area.
REMINDER: If restricted firearms are being imported, an ATT issued by the Chief
Firearms Office (CFO) will need to be provided to the Custom Officer, along with the
letter and PAL at the time of importation.
SCENARIO # 2:
A CANADIAN RESIDENT arrives at the border and declares an unregistered firearm
acquired outside of Canada.
You are advised to contact the Import Unit at the Canadian Firearms Registry, as
soon as possible, during normal business hours. You may do so by calling
1-800-731-4000, ext. 1054, to obtain the proper documents and information to
expedite the registration process.
NOTE: IT IS NOT PERMITTED FOR AN INDIVIDUAL TO IMPORT A PROHIBITED FIREARM INTO
CANADA.
Immediate steps must be taken to have the firearms verified (approved verifiers are
available through our office) and registered as newly imported (form CAFC-998EF -
available by calling 1 800 731-4000 is required to complete the importation
process). Importation info provided above.
For further inquiries, please call our information line at 1 800 731-4000 or consult
our website at www.canadianfirearms.com.
Sincerely,
Xxxxx

Restricted rifles such as the AR15 are limited to 5 round magazines. Handguns are limited to 10 round magazines.
ETA..why would you want to import one when you can buy them here?
