So I want to buy a Russian SKS very badly. Unfortunately I am confused on the laws. Apparently the only stipulation is it must have a fixed mag? Is this true and who comes up with this shit? Also this is probably a really dumb question but do they compromise and allow me to own one with a bayonet?

Perfectly legal with the blade bayonet and the fixed 10 round box magazine.

The Yugo with grenade launcher is perfectly legal too. I own both the Rusian w/blade bayonet and the Yugo with blade bayonet and grenade launcher. Both were purchased in NJ too.

As long as there's no folding or collapsing stock on it because as we all know, that's what makes them assault rifles

On a side note, I recently developed an interest in the SKS as well. What should I expect to pay in the NJ area?

Actually it would be ok to have a folding stock. Since the SKS has a fixed magazine the "evil features" limitations don't apply.

^^^ This. The pre-requisite for classification as an assault firearm for a rifle is being semi-automatic with a removable magazine.
You need to be careful ordering online. There are modified SKS's out there that use AK magazines. I almost bought one for $300 by accident.

But if you put a aftetmarket stock on you must comply with 922r and it loses its c&r status
