Some people want the national guard to patrol Camden.

http://www.myfoxphilly.com/dpp/news/local_news/camden-asks-national-guard-for-help-120611

basically what I understand is this. Some thugs rob a store and kill a guy. People are enraged etc. 10 people shot over last weekend. They're up to 50 homicides this year. the record is 55.

I saw on the news just now that one shooter had an "ak-7" (I assume they meant an AK-47, meaning they think it looks scary) and the other a shotgun.

So instead of saying the reasonable thing, like telling people to arm themselves, some people on the city council want the governor to come and fix their mess with the national guard.

I know Camden is relatively poor, but not that poor if they can afford their fancy cellphones and stuff...if only the government didn't make it so hard for them to acquire weapons. (and if only there weren't so many prohibited persons there or whatever they're called)

At first I didn't think that was even legal, but it turns out, (according to wikipedia...im no expert), that its ok for the national guard to act as law enforcement when under the authority of the governor. Unless there is some state law forbidding this.

I still think it is wrong to do so.

thoughts?

I also think people read too far into certain random events. for example, yes last weekend, 10 people got shot, but the average is more important. (same as with the stock market. one day changes are, for the average person, useless)

Get the fuck outa here!

Remove the Freehoder's control of the PD, force the bullshit, ball licker mayor to step down, fire the faggot puppet chief and put the Police Department back together; that will at least make things the way they were before the County stepped in and started to "fix" the Police, laying off half of them in the process.... Camden was clearly a toilet before all this political monkey fuckin a football mess, but at least there was some resemblance of order. Right now that city is like the wild west and there is nothing to stop it.

The Camden County Freeholders created this problem with their attempts to bust unions instead of insuring residents safety. They played poker with the lives of residents in Camden and so far the only loser are the people that live there.

Cant we just turn on the power to the USS New Jersey and have it level Camden?

Some people want the National Guard to patrol Camden

OP,
Some people fail to understand the difference between a military force and a police force. They think that because they both wear uniforms and carry weapons they have more than a passing similarity. Camden needs a police force free of affirmative action and political meddling or a dozen or so daisy cutters. IMO, Camden is a lost cause. You can't realistically replace internal restraint with external control and Camden's denizens seemingly suffer a dearth of internal restraint

Hopefully this is just a minority opinion getting some headlines (as is often the case).
I doubt any such plan would actually be put into effect. It would be internationally news-worthy and would end G'vnor Doughboy's political career.

But the fact that it is even being considered is evidence that NJ's journey to the dark side is complete.

Considering that a lot of the Natl Guardsmen in NJ are in fact police officers in NJ this inst such a bad Idea. Maybe get those Laid off cops a job doing what they did prior to getting laid off?

I say we just wall Camden off Escape from New York style and let the problem be self correcting.

Is Camden a good place to buy property for a long term investment, Hoboken and JC were similar to Camden 30 years ago. What are the taxes like in Camden ?
Is there a ferry to Philadelphia ?

Yeah I'm not even down wind, I'm IN wind... No nukes.... I don't have the provisions for nukes. Hit it with a big bomb that'll level it, but leave us border towns with at least a survivalists chance.... I'll take one for the team but dam....

Suggestion: Use the Neutrino Bomb. Leave exiting infrastructure intact.

Without a state of emergency declared I doubt the NG soldiers would be able to carry ammo. Even with a SOE they may not be able to. That's a big deal.

They can't even really do what that article is insinuating. What happens is; once the Governer declares a state of emergency, funds are released from both Federal and State level that would enable the City to increase the funds going towards public safety. The NG would really only be deployed to state or federal buildings and properties or possible "high value" targets. So, basically what the City is trying to do is get the rest of the state to further fund the political fuck up that has brought it the points its at now. They're budgeted to get somewhere in the neighborhood of $46 million in state aid next year.... Apparently that's not enough. I know they haven't fixed a fuckin street in the last 30 years, so one can only speculate where the money goes since they eliminated over half of there public safety personnel with the meger $38 million they got in 2011....

Aren't you glad your taxes are going toward a city you don't live in or even near?

About 4 years ago my family sold my grandmother's house i Camden for $12,000 following her death. This is not some kind of run down apartment or row house, but an actual 1200 sq ft 2-story on a standard lot. It wasn't in shambles either - it was 80+ years old but a perfectly livable, nice looking and respectable house. The area though made it impossible to sell. I think I could have torn out the wood and plumbing and made more money selling it as scrap.

The upside for Camden is not what it was for those other places either because Philly is showing no indications of a turnaround such as NYC had in the 80s and 90s.

On the other hand the potential for loss is not there either - spend $15k on a house and if things do turn around it could be worth $300k in 30 yers. On the other hand it will never be worth less than 0.

I'm hyped up on coffee, sudafed and have a toothache so I'm not holding back.
1. The NG is a wonderful group of devoted people who volunteer to help out when needed, like in cases of disaster. They are not a municipal police force. Inability of Camden's residents, government and police does not constitute an emergency.
2. I don't think the NG would have much effect in the long term, the crime rate may drop for a short time but the NG is not going to be there forever. When the crime rate drops the NG will be pulled, and the crime rate will go right back up.
3. Camdens problem is a direct result of the residents. People in that city don't want to do anything for themselves, so if they are unwilling to take a stand and make changes themselves; they deserve the conditions in which they live.
4. No the the NG. Yes to the Air Force. Bomb the Sh#t out of the city and rebuild. Start with a clean slate.
My $0.02
