Well, after years of being anti Mac.......

My Compewter broke for the last time last week.

Red lines down the screen, doomed graphics card, it's on its fifth hard drive, constantly getting slower and slower despite being a monster dual core processor and regular rebuilds. Virus etc, cables everywhere and regular crashes were starting to take their toll on my patience.

Had seen quite a few Macs over the years and while I was never particularly enamoured, I thought it was time to consider other options. Went to the Apple store on the way to get the PC fixed and had a quick look.

Never thought I'd see the day. PC is gone......Mac now on the desk.

Now I've got to learn how to use the thing but so far I'm fairly impressed.

Anyone else got one?

Have three computers set up here. Work laptop, personal PC and a Mac Mini, which I do all my editing on (and the occasional piece of IOS programming when I can be bothered).

Once you get used to it, it's fine and additional apps and the like are reasonably priced - just the initial outlay!

Yep, that pretty much sums it up.

I got the iMac 27" So far pretty impressed. It's the same as my old PC in a lot of ways and a lot of stuff is intuitive, but it is different in some subtle ways that sometimes leave you sat there wondering what the hell is happening.

It's amazing how many apps it can handle in one go without slowing down, and it uses half the power of the PC.

Yeah, that was a choker and Mrs AF had hair like Don King when I got home. She thought I'd nipped out to drop my PC off at the computer plumbers and came back with an iMac and an iPad.

Just got promoted at work and a hefty payrise, so the impact should be less than anticipated, fortunately.

As Mark said - the same, but different!

Although I should point out in the defence of PCs that Apple use the exact same hard disks as everyone else - so if you've had 4 fail, then the chances are that you'll be needing the AppleCare!!

Been using Macs for some time now. I thoroughly recommend that you get the time machine function up and running to a separate external disk. This will enable you to get back to where you were if the internal disk fails.

If you haven't already, get a Anti Virus program.

Since they moved to Intel inside they are basicly the same as PC's. Everyone I know who has one buys a proper mouse and uses Bootcamp for Windows.

This is not quite correct.

The hardware might be similar but the operating system is not the same.

Due to the fact that OSX is built on a UNIX core and has a more strict (server like) method for handling application specific file permissions, it is less vulnerable to viruses.

This doesn't mean it's totally immune, but in 15 years of using Mac OS I've never had a virus.

Oh, and IMO the Apple Mighty Mouse is about as 'proper' as a mouse can be

Yes I know it’s built on top of a UNIX system and there are some slight differences, but for normal users it’s not much. Some options might be in a different place, or some programs look slightly different, but for most general users there’s little different between a Mac and a Normal PC these days.

Viruses aren’t too much of a problem for Mac’s or PC’s anymore, generally the worst threats out there are Trojans, or spyware. They are being written for Mac’s now as they are seen as an easy target, and most Mac users I know don’t think they need any Anti-Virus software.

Just going off what people tell me, and just about every Mac user I know changes their mouse within a month, and every single one uses Bootcamp for Windows 7.

Fair enough. Do these people also install Android on their iPhones/iPads to make them less secure and less efficient??

Can I have this huge pile of unwanted Apple Mighty Mice then? Always handy to have a spare

Mine came with this stuff:

Quite liking it so far but still trying to get the hang of the right click bit.......not sussed it out yet.

It is getting easier to use the more time I spend on it and I'm liking it more than my PC so far.

The 27" screen and incredible resolution was quite startling at first.

Cool You might fancy the extended keyboard if you do much with numbers, but truly you WILL love the mouse once you get used to it.
However, if you do hate it enough to buy a shitty 2 button scroll wheel mouse, let me know and I'll have it off you for a fair price

Just got the LMP attachment Bluetooth bit thingedy. I think it's LMP anyway. Sticks to the keyboard at the side and is wireless

I was always of the same view as the anti-apple peeps but I must say that the differences are slight and far from insurmountable. There's still some bits that don't come to you instinctively, and you need to think about them a bit more.....where having used windows for so long I would have acted without thinking.......things like the favourites in the browser for instance, but for the most part its .......the same but different.

Quite like the dashboard and quick zoom features as well.

All good.

Never quite got the Apple vs PC thing myself. I've always used both.
They both do a job and are quite capable if set-up and used properly.

The common denominator when people have issues with either platform is generally the user.

Mac's cost more, but it's worth the extra because they last far longer. Case in point, I still have a G4 Powerbook Titanium that cost over £1k 11 years ago.
It still runs OSX and still works perfectly and looks great.

In that time, Mrs Burnside has been through 2 PC laptops that either wore out or would no longer run a modern OS.

Guess what she uses now....

Yes, you got it, she uses my 11 year old Powerbook since I bought a Mac Air about 4 years ago

Heard of it and looked into it but I bought Microsoft Office for Mac and have decided that the dual boot idea is surplus to requirements, as all my Windows documents that matter work perfectly on the Mac....

If it's a G4 Powerbook it must be running OSX Leopard (at the latest) - which is from 2009 & 2 versions out of date as Apple don't support it any more. If you'd spent £1000 on a Windows laptop in 2001, it would still run XP - which is 2 versions out of date as well!! (And probably just as slow as the Mac!)

Except in my experience, a windows Laptop from 2001 is nought but a paperweight these days. I've just binned one of our old laptops from 2003. It was next to useless by 2006, and after providing a blue screen of death it became nothing but a forgotten lump of something I recently found again in an old filing cabinet in the shed while we were doing a clear out a couple of weeks ago.

On the flip side, a friend who has been an advocate of Apple Macs for a long time told me today that he has had his Mac laptop for 9 years and he's still chuffed with it. his 3 year old Windows laptop is so old it's been relegated to playing DVDs as a makeshift telly in his young daughters bedroom. Then again, the laptop costs £600 whereas the Mac cost him £1000

I've only had this iMac thing for a couple of days, and it's a nice piece of kit. Don't know how long it will last, or how it will perform, but it has some high expectations to live up to, especially given the cost.

I'll reserve judgement until I've had it for a few years.

It is, but leopard runs fine on it and is still very fast & reliable, so not too sure what you mean.

A PC laptop from 2001 will possibly run XP but slow as fuck.

The point is that an 11 year old PC laptop would be virtually unusable now, even for web browsing. I know this because I have one and XP crippled it when I tried it years ago. The PowerBook was expensive when new but still in normal service.

If this is hard for you to fathom, just keep on buying PC's, your contribution to landfill will be much appreciated by future generations.

In my case,
"Well, after years of being anti Mac....... "
I still am......

overpriced and indoctrination... ok some models look good, but the extra costs they charge for standard components is just shocking.

Apple release operating systems frequently and the Mac users i know they just buy them up, in comparison an M$ OS works out cheaper over the same timespan.

My missus had problems a year or so back with the the WIndows XP install on her netbook. In frustration with it i just installed Ultimate Edition linux, she seemed happy with it. A month or so back i went to put windows back on it, and she freaked out and said 'No way' she is that happy with it. Personally i use Win7 on most of my pcs.
Neither Macs nor linux are appropriate for gaming...

You said your your G4 is good for web browsing - I'm saying a PC laptop that cost the same as the G4 would be equally good for web browsing with XP today... Not that hard to fathom. I have Macs and PCs - and my 4yr old Mac Mini was feeling decidedly old & slow when I got rid of it... My 3yr old PC is still faster than most new PCs because it was a good quality PC when I bought it.

I've just replaced two 9 yr old XP PCs in a business - they were still running quite happily for Word/Excel/Internet. They only replaced them because they wanted to start a bit of video editing...

Mac fans have a habit of comparing expensive Macs with shitty cheap PCs...

I'm currently writing this from an 6 year old PC running XP. All the shooting videos I make are on a 3 year old mac mini using iMovie.

Both platforms are fine and as long as you are sensible, will last a long time (peripheral failure aside).

Sorry I forgot that Apple made products out of magic and pixy dust and not computer parts.

Of Course they are not made with normal Intel motherboards, or CPU’s and they don’t use AMD graphics cards, or the screens, that are made by Samsung. And they are not made by Foxcom, which is the same production line as Dell and HP’s.

No you are right, they are pure magic and they are made by Santa himself.

Welcome to the Cult, where do I apply?

Yeah, I give up too. Everything Apple makes is super awesome, it's made from pure magic, and defiantly not the same components everything else is made from.

I forgot you can not have a discussion with a fanatic. I suppose they have to justify the fact that they paid more than double for what is in effect, these days, a normal PC.

I've got a Mac, but I've also got a PC.

Which one is better? Fucked if I know!
All I want is something that works and does email, Internet, word and Excel.

The rest I really couldn't give a rats ass about.

My PC is on its last legs and the Mac was a good price and has a nice 27" screen, so I'm happy.

Aimpoint is better than EoTech though

If you took the time to read my original post you would realise that I am not an 'Apple fanboy' and do in fact use both platforms.
My only point is that in my experience Apple laptops (YES I said Apple laptops in my original post) are better made and last longer than PC laptops, especially in the hands of professionals that actually use computers as tools to get a job done - not as toys to fill their empty time.

I am talking from experience and the scenario I explained fact. Since then, you two complete nerds have spent ages trying to pick holes with 'what if's' and 'maybe's'

Please can you just accept what is in effect my opinion, born from years of experience? I don't mind anyone disagreeing, but trying to join forces in slagging me off is pathetic.

Failing that, if I retract everything I've said and agree with you will you just shut the fuck up as you are boring the shite out of me

All I want is something that works and does email, Internet, word and Excel.

The rest I really couldn't give a rats ass about.

My PC is on its last legs and the Mac was a good price and has a nice 27" screen, so I'm happy.

Aimpoint is better than EoTech though

WHAT!!!! Bloddy Aimpoint fanatic's. This site is full of them

PS, New iMac is due out in approx 2 months, you should of waited to join the cult.

Have, the expression is " you should have waited", of course have can be replaced with 've, and therefore you could use the expression "you should've waited"

Of course with a Mac, iPad etc, it would pick up on this.

burnside, good to see you can finally get involved in something on here, I mean it certainly won't be shooting as you don't even have a gun

You should go and hang out with Cromlech, at least you both have something in common

I shoot plenty, thanks .

You are correct, I do not yet have my own firearms (as you have repeatedly mentioned), but that will change very soon

Oh, and you can fuck off too
