I'm use to carrying a pocket knife wherever I go, is this going to be a problem in Germany?

thanks

Probably will be, as we have just had another change in the weapon laws that makes the carrying of most knives illegal.

I don't really know the new laws word perfect because I only ever carry a little Swiss Army knife 2" long when closed, or a Gerber tool.

When do you get here? Post pics of what you normally carry and I'll get the info on the laws for you.

I would like to bring a multitool like the one on the bottom and either my spyderco police knife or my gerber pocket knife.

Hiya Greg,

I have just taken the time and visited a few German web pages, now I don't know how good your German is, but I'll link the one i found to be the best after I have finished the rough translation.

Es ist verboten/ It is Forbidden (to carry on your person, unless you are a hunter/fisher/mountain climber, or you require a knife for your job or it is a part of a traditional costume etc etc., but only while you are participating in such activities).

* Hieb- und Stoßwaffen (hierunter fallen auch Schwerter, Dolche, zweischneidige Messer, Degen, Rapiere, Bajonette und weitere)
* Knives and such ( in this category Swords, daggers, double edged, knives, etc etc.

* feststehende Messer mit einer Klingenlänge über 12 cm
* Sheath knives with a blade length over 12cm

* oder Messer mit einhändig feststellbarer Klinge (Einhandtaschenmesser, inkl. Springmesser) ohne Rücksicht auf die Klingenlänge
* or one handed lock knives and flick knives regardless of the blade length.

link

So I guess the tool will be okay, the others are a NO NO.

Hope this answered your question.

1911greg, are you a servicemember? If so, than you are not allowed to carry a knife under USEUCOM policy. Multitool will not be an issue.

Funny thing about Germany's knife law is that you can go to Oktoberfest and see men walking around with decent sized hunting knives in the knife pocket of their lederhosen. Haven't seen any of them get in trouble yet.

I've lived in Germany for almost five years, and I too was used to carrying a knife with me everywhere when I was living in the States. But over here you really don't need it. Just don't go hanging around the rough areas in the cities acting like you are ten foot tall and bullet proof and you will not have a problem. Besides, there is no open container law in Germany and the German beer bottle are pretty stout and can double as a blunt object.

That's due to the Traditional Costume or Trachten in German, having said that this years Oktoberfest will be the first one after these new knife laws were introduced, so we will have to wait and see.

Are you still up for the range's on the 18/19th

Roger, .mil here. I just left the knife, figured I didn't want to get thrown in prison

Thanks for the heads up though. Germany has been great!
