NMWTF Handgun, Rifle & Shotgun Class
OK, you bastards! Time to put-up or shut-up!
I want to organize a handgun class that's beyond the norm. First, I want to benefit the NMWTF, second, I'm hurting to make ends meet so need to sell some training.
So, here's the deal: Tell me what you want from a handgun class. Surely, It'll exceed the requirements for NM CHL but that isn't enough. Let's make it epic! We have instructors who are ex-SEALs, ex-Feds, ex-SOs and more. I have some ideas for a class that I think would be useful and challenging but I want to hear from you, the end-users. We can schedule it and reserve the range for early spring when the weather is better. What do you want from a handgun class?
I am in.
Why not set up some shoot/no shoot scenarios.
21' rule with testing of abilities.
Retention.
Decision making under stress.
Room clearing.
Shoot/no shoot scenarios. (Woman w/ Uzi vs. woman w/ baby.)
I'm definitely in! I'd like to do some strong vs weak hand shooting, loading drills, malfunction drills, shooting with friendlies, lanes of fire, advancing fire, retreat firing (Are we allowed by law to hold our ground in the event of an armed intruder break in or do we have the obligation to retreat and use force when the armed intruder continues to pursue.)
Count me in

What are the fees looking like BK3?

I'd really like to know more about weapon retention as well as techniques for disarming an assailant. I would also be interested in other handgun training as previously posted if the class is in or close to ABQ.

It'll largely depend upon whether it's a one-day or two-day class. That will largely depend upon the amount of material we want to cover.

No duty to retreat here in NM.
I'll take the class. I am up for whatever you have time to teach.
I would prefer one really long day than spreading it accross two days if it would be a Sat-Sun (my weekends off get pretty busy) ...but I would be down for whatever the group decided.

I'm down for a 13-15 hour day with a sack lunch during lecture time. How many mags and rounds do we need BK?

The range is only open 9-5. Let me wrap my head around it a bit.
Considering the likely skill level of the WTF members, we can cover a lot in a day. You won't master skills, but will have the knowledge to practice them on your own and know if you're doing them effectively.
One way that I like to take basic skills and make them into an advanced class is through "task loading." It's easy to deal with a couple of concepts at one time but gets exponentially harder as you add more skilled processes that must be performed simultaneously. With this group, we can do some basic skills mixed with advanced skills and get something that's challenging, relevant and fun. Some of the stuff suggested is inappropriate in a live-fire situation (retention, etc.) so could be done after the range closes to extend the training time available in one day. One of the great "gold nuggets" in our curriculum is the Restaurant Assignment and could be done on your own time. We strive to make each of our students ready to teach their "Inner Circle" what they've learned to multiply the added safety of having attending training.
Enough preaching, let's hear more of what y'all want!

How does 3/5/2011 and $125 each sound? This is our price for basic, 7-hour, CCW refresher training. Our normal price for private instruction is $250 for four hours, three students or less.
We can run more hours on more advanced skills with more instructors for the same price. Fuggit! It's y'all's class so if you wanna mix carbines and shotguns into the mix then I'm fine with that!
Count me as down brother! Handgun and Carbine!! Wow, that'd be badass!!!!! What kind of ammo totals are we looking at? A single point sling gonna cut it for the AR's?

3/5 would work for me (I'm off that weekend)...count me in. I like the idea of getting some carbine in. How much ammo are you thinking we need to bring?
Crap! Sorry guys but we have a reloading class that I'm to attend on 3/5 so we'll have to move the date. My apologies. It's being taught by my reloading and gunsmithing mentor so, if you're interested in learning what you don't know about reloading, let me know.
To keep things cost-effective and flowing, I think 150 rounds for pistol and 75 rounds for long gun should be sufficient but don't be afraid to bring more.
For now, I'm working on having moving targets, interesting cover, targets behind cover and hostages. Oh yeah, and having you guys dealing with a clueless protectee while negotiating all that, along with the usual stuff like weapon malfunctions, reloads, threat ID, bystanders, weapon transitions, low light, bad breath, etc, all while having your sights covered-up with tape.
Off the range, we can work some retentions and disarms.
How does that sound so far?
I'd really like to play....where is this training held at?

Good. Make it happen and people will come.
BK3 - What date are you thinking now? I work every other weekend, so hopefully it falls on a day off...I guess I have a 50/50 chance

Same here.
How 'bout some off hand training?

if its on a sunday i might be able to attend.
While we're on a "Y'all's class" topic: I've always wondered if anyone would like to put together a "Show and Tell" class. Everyone brings his favorite, most exotic or unusual or just plain classic guns and lets everyone try them out.

That is generally what happens at our shoots. Whatever is new, whatever is odd, bring it and pass it around the campfire to be fingerbanged.
How about March 20th. (sunday) I think that would be a good date for everybody. 0700-1900 That gives us 2 hours (before the range opens) in the front of the class to get to know each other say howdy get stuff together, then we have 2 hours at the end of class to talk about stuff like retention and other stuff like that. Also, BK3 are single point slings on our rifles gonna work on the range? I know some places require at least a 2 pointer.
What range is this to be held at?
The 20th should work just fine.
I don't have any problem with single point slings. They're your feet, not mine.
The plan is to conduct the range portion at the city's shooting range park on the west mesa. I'll try to have everything as prefabricated as possible to speed setup.
3 weeks and counting down my friends! I'm getting my stuff ready! Sunday the 20th gonna work for most people? BTW: I found Kimber pro tac mags for $18 bucks on the Armory.com, that's a smoking deal on those things.

BK3:
Sundays are usually bad for me, but I'll make it happen (I am off that weekend). Just a couple questions though...
-Start and stop time of class
-You said the "range portion at the city's shooting range"...how much will be class room vs. range time?
-What type gear to bring
-What type of firearms to bring
-How much ammo to bring
-Do you have an agenda made up that you can share with us?
-Do we have to prepay or is it okay to pay on the day?
-Is there a discount for spouses? I may like her to eves drop but probably wouldn't do a whole lot of shooting (well, maybe with a couple 22s)
Looking forward to it!

Is their a sign up? Or just show up?
Guys,
I just got word that the 20th won't work well for my fellow instructors or me. Sorry for the last-minute change. Can we move it to the 27th?
As far as equipment, it can be as simple as handgun, holster, ammo, mags & pouches to "sky's the limit." For sure, bring water, sunscreen and food. If you have dummy rounds or snap-caps, please bring those as well so we can
sabotage your shit set up malfunctions to deal with. The class will focus more on tactics than burning ammo but don't forget to bring enough BBs to allow shooting 'till you're happy and some try-outs of each others' guns.

Handguns, rifles, carbines, shotguns, SMGs and PDWs are all welcome.
The range doesn't open until 0900 so we can meet earlier, maybe near the range, to get some chit-chat and show-n-tell done before it opens.
The only things we really should cover off the range are some retention and disarm techniques, our take on use-of-force and fingerprints for anyone who is renewing their concealed handgun license. The range closes at 1700 so we could go to our classroom and work that stuff as long as you'd like.
Tuition will be $125, including range fees, and the class will count for concealed handgun license refresher or renewal. Spouses are welcome to attend, especially if they poke fun. If they want to take the class, they'll get a $50 discount, as long as they shoot better than the spouses who brought them.

Seriously, $50 off for spouses participating. That doesn't mean cross-dressing! I know some of you were thinking about it...
Again, please post if you plan to attend. Ideal class size is 6-10 and it may be awhile before we run such a complex class.
Feel free to offer requests or feedback.
Thanks,
Lee
So, If I'm understanding this right, This class is not going to be enough to get us our CCL, only renew a CCL? I don't have my CCL, so I think I'd rather spend that money to get my CCL. I'd love to go to this class but I gotta focus on getting a CCL in the first place. Bummer!

For you to get your initial CCW here you need 16 hours of instruction. That ain't going to happen between 0900-1700 in one day.
I'm out for the 27th...have to work

I have my kiddo's that weekend. I wont be able to make it either.
Well, crap!
Would 4-3-2011 work?
We have a regular handgun course scheduled so anyone who needs the full CHL class could do the classroom part on Sat and the shooting on Sun...
I'm off that weekend. What would the charge be for both days for the CHL?
Originally Posted By locknloadNM:

I'll be at that one. BKiii send me an IM with your company's info so I can get signed up please sir. And thank you.

Any other takers for the new date?
Thank you brother! See ya soon!

Well, I figured that since he didn't have to tell us where the muzzle was, where the breach was, where the button to release the mag was, where the front sight was, where the back sight was, where to point the muzzle, how to check if it's unloaded, and all the other liberal school girl bullshit that goes with teaching someone who has never held a gun, been around a gun, and completely scared of guns, we'd be able to cram the curriculum into one day.

It would be nice if the law allowed people to test out of the basics but it doesn't. It also mandates what must be covered.
Your right BKiii, they have to have laws for the lowest common denominator. God forbid any of us have a brain and think for ourselves! !

So, is it just going to be Ben for the class? We hope to have a few people to make it interesting...
So, let me make sure I have this correct. The class is pistol & carbine, taught at the shooting range park on 4/3 at a cost of $125. If these are the final details I will check my schedule.
I would but Just found out that my
Mosquito Slide is cracked and will cost $125 to replace it...
Need to keep the cost effectiove gun running.

Correct!
