Anyone else have handheld GPS problems around Buffalo River area?

I do lots of backpacking and hiking in Northern/Central Arkansas….mainly around the Buffalo River areas. It seems like whenever I’m down in those areas, my handheld GPS (DeLorme PN-20) can never get a lock on enough satellites to tell me where I’m at. It doesn’t seem to matter if I’m at the bottom of a large valley, or at the top of a peak….even with clear skies it seems to never want to hook up. My Garmin eTrex I used to have was not much better.

But as soon as I head back home towards Southwest Missouri, it seems to hook up just fine. It’s frustrating when you are out hiking, and you have your GPS on all day long, and it will run the batteries out before it ever hooks up and gives your location.

Are there “dead spots” down in Arkansas? I’ve never had any problems with GPS’s except when I’m down in those areas. Anyone else have this problem with their handheld GPS?

The GPS on my iPhone works up there. I know that's not exactly what you are asking about, but it's all I have to offer.

Yes, I had issues with an old "gen 1" Garmin GPS-12 being able to pick up enough satellites to figure out where I was. Can't speak to current hardware and any issues that may exist though.
