I do lots of backpacking and hiking in Northern/Central ArkansasÖ.mainly around the Buffalo River areas. It seems like whenever Iím down in those areas, my handheld GPS (DeLorme PN-20) can never get a lock on enough satellites to tell me where Iím at. It doesnít seem to matter if Iím at the bottom of a large valley, or at the top of a peakÖ.even with clear skies it seems to never want to hook up. My Garmin eTrex I used to have was not much better.
But as soon as I head back home towards Southwest Missouri, it seems to hook up just fine. Itís frustrating when you are out hiking, and you have your GPS on all day long, and it will run the batteries out before it ever hooks up and gives your location.
Are there ďdead spotsĒ down in Arkansas? Iíve never had any problems with GPSís except when Iím down in those areas. Anyone else have this problem with their handheld GPS?
The GPS on my iPhone works up there. I know that's not exactly what you are asking about, but it's all I have to offer.
Yes, I had issues with an old "gen 1" Garmin GPS-12 being able to pick up enough satellites to figure out where I was. Can't speak to current hardware and any issues that may exist though.
