Find someone to transfer you one for $5 or build one for $200

This.

FWIW, I would much rather pay the 200 and have a stock.

can someone give a newb a rundown of AOW Shotgun requirements? Sounds like building one is the way to go? Details?

an AOW shotgun is basically a shotty that came FROM THE FACTORY with a pistol grip only and a 18" barrel.

A person or manufacturer can then pay $200 to the ATF to make it an AOW with a less-than-18"bbl. They can then transfer it to you for $5 plus the wait of filling out a Form 4 and sending to the ATF.

If you were to build your own AOW it would still cost you $200... so why not just do a SBR and have the option of a stock on there?

A person or manufacturer (if a SOT builds it, they do so w/o the 200 tax) can then pay $200 to the ATF to make it an AOW with a less-than-18"bbl. They can then transfer it to you for $5 plus the wait of filling out a Form 4 and sending to the ATF.
