I like to keep a few extra around, I can say they usually don't stay stripped for long since I usually can pick up LPKs at gun shows pretty reasonable. But I really just enjoy building them and I guess it never hurts to have some extra in the safe in case the decide to ban them one day.

I ordered some on black Friday. I've not built one but have an LPK coming for one of them as we speak. They look solid so far.

As far as lowers go, yes.
Usually any forged aluminum lower made to "mil spec" is just as good as anything else.

Might I suggest surplus ammo and arms lowers from aim.
I think they were 60 bucks last I checked. High quality. The rear takedown pin detent hole is threaded for a set screw so that you can swap stocks and receiver end plates without worrying about it coming out.
