work argument of the day. hunting mountain lions in ia
Couple guys arguing weather or not you can legally hunt mountain lions in iowa...
Mabey you can be the one to settle the argument....
yes.
no
non protected species. no hunting season. you may shoot them on sight. Tip of the day- Make sure you kill it, if you are squirrel hunting with a .22, probably best to exit the area. Liona are known to stalk and kill humans.Wounding one could be hazardous to your health.

Yes, use enough gun.
Thank you. Argument resolved. Peace and order has been restored at the work place.

you work in an environment where a bunch of hacks from the internet settle debates for you? lol...
sounds like i need to be selling you guys some shit...
Good luck 'hunting' one though. They are even more rare than bears (which, btw, are also a kill-on-sight species) in Iowa.

Well if it's on them internet it has to be true

But,"..................the DNR says there aren't any in Iowa. Well, maybe one lone male that was forced out of his territory in Colorado.
The heck there aren't any in Iowa. I've got family in north central Iowa(Eagle Grove/ Clarion area) Both my uncle and my cousin have seen one while driving at night on 2 separate occasions.

That was their first opinion but the outrage from folks forced them to later admit that they had secretly released some ( I don't think I ever saw a number) to re-introduce them into Iowa b/c they had been a natural species in Iowa until settlers eradicated them.
You can SHOOT mountain lions in IA, but I wouldn't recommend HUNTING them, especially with a rifle during deer season. No restrictions on them means no hunting license needed, and any legal girearm, bow or even crossbow is fine right? No DNR officer will believe you when he stops you to check for a license upon seeing you roaming the woods with a rifle-"I'm not illegally huinting deer, I'm hunting mountain lions". I know people who have had headaches with certain officers hunting coyotes with a bolt action .223-DNR officer on a power trip thought they just HAD to be trying to shoot a deer.
That said, if you see a mountain lion, shoot it just for being a cat. We have enough problems around here with 15 pound cats running wild, we don't need 115 pound cats as wll.
Reason this question came up at work was because a coworker found an 8 point buck that looked like it was drug up a tree on his propert of his farm and pretty much torn apart. He thought the only thing that could of drug it up there was a mountain lion and he wants to shoot it and another coworker insisted that it was illegal to kill them in ia.
I get a least two tags a year, the DNR doesn't want you to know about them. They're $100 a tag and they have to be hand writen by a DNR officer, some won't write them for you. Others will write them all day. You don't need a small game license or habitat fee. Happy hunting!

Well deer is a cash cow for the DNR. They sell tags, regular and bonus, for deer that don't exist is some counties. Deer numbers in east central IA are down from where they were 2 yrs. ago but they are still selling a lot of tags.I live in deer habitat & travel through a couple heavily travel deer corridors and have not seen any where near the number of deer I used to. Others I know have the same opinion and a couple of them are avid deer hunters.

Is that like "kinda pregnant"? Was it up a tree? It was a lion.
What county?
Took the kids to a "Wild Cats in Iowa" educational display at a local DNR conservation center where they had a map of Iowa with push pins every where they have had confirmed mountain lion sightings There was quite a few pins in that map.

I agree with that whole statement, and the "cash cow" part is exactly why I made the remark recommending against actually hunting for a mountain lion. We all know they're here, and I have heard semi credible stories of them being much farther north than DNR admits(I talked with one person who claimed to have shot and wounded one in Worth County) but I'm not going looking for one anytime soon. If I see one by chance while I'm armed(most of the time if I'm not at work) OTOH, I'm doing my best to put it on my wall.
