Range Report: Bald Mountain DNR Range
Had a chance to hit the Bald Mountain DNR shooting range today. It was chilly and very windy. Still fun though.
The concessionaire that runs the range has noticeably more laid back atmosphere than I remember it when the DNR was in charge. There was no barking of orders, no RSO standing behind you inspecting your situation. It was nice.
One of the RSOs had a Bolt Face Logo hat... we chatted a little about AR15.com. That was cool.
A guy next to me had 2 young boys, they were blasting away at 50 yards with a tricked out 10/22, having a great time. He noticed my Rem 870 and asked me if I could take a look at his shotgun. "I can't load it for some reason", he told me. He had a lovely Browning Auto-5 that he had inherited from Grandpa. I showed him how to open the bolt and close it by pressing the release button on the side. Sure enough, 12ga slugs would not go down the tube. Puzzled, I looked all over the gun for the shell... and there it was, on the barrel in small engraving, "2 3/4 20 ga". No wonder it wouldn't feed 12ga slugs!
Killed some paper plates offhand at 50yd with my Olympic Arms mutt AR.
There was some of the usual herp-derp you see at the public range. One guy had an AK type rifle with some sort of high-rise scope mount and a red dot. He was shooting it at a target placed about 15 feet away. I was wondering how bad out-of-zero he would be if he tried to shoot the same setup at 25 or 50 yards.
Guys who were having their shots wander all over the paper kept blaming the wind gusts... 'cept I don't think high winds will have much real effect on bullets that only have to travel 50 yards.
All in all, a good day for an outdoor range trip.
Stop posting about how nice Bald Mtn range is. I usually have it to my self on Mondays.
You have to try a round of sporting clays too. If I feel like a walk through the woods I hoof it. Otherwise, you can rent a golf cart.
I will never rent a golf cart for a 100 yard stroll!
I do want to try the clays, but my only shotty is a cylinder bore 18" 870. Might be good practice...

The sporting clays is no 100yrd stroll. It about a 100yrds between each station. It wonders back in the woods. The Executive Course up front is about 100yrds wide total.
Ive walked the sporting clays course and enjoyed it. I've also split the cost of a cart with a second shooter. Makes me feel like I'm golfing with a shotgun.
I haven't been there in about 10 years. I hated it back then because of being constantly watched over by the overbearing ROs. No loading of magazines either single shots only.

Has all that changed?
I love it there now. My favorite is to take a weekday off work and head up there early, I almost always have the place to myself for a while.
We should have a work "hooky" day and go up there.

You may load 6 rounds in your magazine. If you sneak in more, they may not notice.
They do request "no rapid fire", which for me means waiting about 1s between shots.

6 rounds? What is the rationale for that?
If you guys end up making a day of things at bald mountain let me know I live just a few blocks behind it.
IIRC it's the regs. I think it is based on the venerable 6-shooter revolver.

there may be multiple reasons, but i know that when they call it for target changing they don't want people sitting there shooting 25 more rounds. I was there one time when some guy with his kid and a tube-magazine .22 rifle kept shooting forever after the RO called it, and when the RO said "that's why we have the 6 rnd limit" the father proceeded to be a dick about it, and the RO then returned the favor and started enforcing the 6rnd limit that day for everyone, where they had not cared before.
In my experience they never check how many you have loaded, but if you are going to flagrantly shoot a whole hi-cap mag while everyone else is behind the yellow line waiting for a target change, you can expect them to ding you on it.
Still no steel case or steel cored alloowed? I stopped going after that gem and a few emails between myself and the guy who runs the place.

I heard somthing about a new and improved pistol range coming soon, also somthing about steel targets?
I was not asked about my ammo, case nor core. I witnessed someone else shooting lacquered steel case Russian crap and nothing was said.
???

One big improvement on the pistol range: they now have target stands, so you can shoot at any range from about 15 feet to the full 25 yards. Before, you used to only be able to shoot 25 yards, which was tough with a pistol.
