I might be vacationing in Mackinac Island this summer. What can you tell me?

Places to stay, things to do, things to see.

Thanks.

It's kind of an old fashion town. There are no cars allowed on the island so you either walk, bike or horse it around. The Grand Hotel is a fantastic place but you'll have to bring a suit and tie. Every time I bring visitors we usually take the horse buggy tours. The fudge is pretty good. There are a few bars.

Biking or walking will allow you to see things at your own pace. Check out the fort. Bring your wallet.

Is it better to stay the night off the Island or are there reasonable places to stay the night on the Island?

There was a movie filmed at the Grand Hotel my wife likes. That's why "we" want to visit.

I like the no cars thing. We like to ride bikes and the weather in August seems much better than down here.

The Grand is nice but over rated in my opinion. Nice to stay there once. The dinner service is an event. Enjoy a nice cold rum cocktail while sitting in the rocking chairs on the porch. Have more than two and you wont get out of the chair, the caribbean staff/bartender makes them strong :)
I like Mission Point Resort better. Much better value and on the water. The Chippewa and Iroquois are also nice.

Bike, foot, or horse back are the way to go. Save up a few extra bucks and hire a buggy for a day trip. Theres Cindys and Jacks. A great way to see ALL of the Island instead of just the fuggie areas.

Great maps can be found here and Here and Here

Some historic stuff around the cemetaries and the site of the Britsh Landing. There a little burger stop back there too. Cannonball Inn

The Pink Pony Bar is attached to the Chippewa Hotel. Great night spot.

If you have kids theres a bunch of stuff to do on the Mackiaw City side too including Thunderfalls.

If theres not enough for you to do then Downtown Petosky and Charlevoix arnt far, so is Sault St Marie to see the Locks, and theTahquamenon Falls area.

If that is the case I'd pony up for at least 1 night in the Grand Hotel, the plus is you can walk on the porch for free then.

Mackinaw City is pretty cool and has a large assortment of shopping choices, and the better hotels.
St Ignace is scummy
Both have a good assortment of souvenir stores.

Been there a handful of times. Best time was renting a house for the weekend- much easier and fun than the/a hotel IMHO.

A house. Now that's an idea. I'll have to look into that.

I enjoy staying cabins in the Smoky Mountains.

Take the buggy tour. The tour guide will tell you the history and show the points of interest that you may miss.

Bring money. Season lasts about 3 months from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
They make their Florida money during those three months.
If you like ships, you'll like the Soo Locks. About an hour north from Mackinaw City over the bridge.
Don't know if they give out ship locking times anymore but you can check the website or call.
Take the boat tour of the locks, it's fun.

Bike trip just around the island is fun and easy.
