 CPL application wait time?

How long is the typical wait time? I submitted my application August 16 in Kent county, and as of the first week of November, they still haven't gotten my info to the gun board, and they said I had to wait until next month's meeting. The guidelines are that the gun board must give me a response within forty-five days of receiving my application, but this seems to be an end run around that. I was given an excuse of short staffing, but it seems to me that the $105 application fee should buy me a couple of man hours. What is everyone else's experience?

Clinton County was only 2-3 weeks for the wife's CPL and also my renewal CPL.

Wow, when was that? Like I said, I turned mine in August 16, which puts us at over 130 days, and was told not to expect it until after the gun board meets next month.

Mine took about 2 months in Kent county, and that was back when you still had to appear in front of the board. I think I missed the cutoff to get it in front of the board by about 2 days when I turned in the paperwork. It might be time for you to start asking more questions, maybe even start sending letters, although I'm not sure who you need to send them to. Might be worth doing some reading on MCRGO to see what they recommend.

Thanks, watertower for the MCRGO lead. It appears that the delay was at the Michigan State Police. I called number listed there, and was told that they received my fingerprint card back in August when I submitted my application. I then called the Kent County Sheriff's department on the recommendation of the clerk at MSP. The clerk said that the background check had been completed and forwarded on to the county clerk's office on Nov. 9. She then said that the gun board meets on the first Thursday of the month, and I should receive my CPL card in the mail after that.

I put in my renewal in wayne county first thing in October. Showed "approved" on county website first week of November. Received my license on Saturday Nov. 19 (cool plastic license, not cheap laminated one). Letter showed gun board met on oct. 26 - So a total of about 7 weeks from application to having license which is too long in my opinion but actually is pretty good for wayne county....

So who's sitting on these applications? Is it the Sheriff's Department or the County Clerk's office? Other counties can clearly put these through, so who's holding up the works? I don't want to vote for whichever one it is

Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner! A little bit of Googling turns up many reports of her finding many excuses for bucking the CPL application process. What my Googling couldn't turn up is when she comes up for election. Anybody know how to find that out?

I turned mine in almost the exact same time as the OP and was told it would be 4 months. When I asked why it would take so long I was told at the clerks office they only have one lady doing all the background checks. When I was taking my CPL class my instructor blamed Kent County's long wait time on the Sheriff who he claimed was anti-gun.

I had the same wait a couple of years ago with Kent County. I see their service hasn't imporved.

I got a reply from Sen. Green's office stating thanking me for my input and stating that there is a hearing in committee today to try to reform this process.

Basically there isn't anything they can do for me at this point, I should be getting my license next week, but hopefully others won't have to put up with this.

Just in case anybody's interested, I received my CPL on Saturday. To me, this puts the responsibility on the Sheriff's Department for the delays. I mentioned earlier in this thread that I called the MSP about the status of my fingerprint report, and they seemed surprised that I was asking, because they had processed it back to the SD back in August, where it sat until mid November. The SD got the info to the gun board for last Thursday night's meeting, where the app was approved, then the County Clerk's office processed the card and got it in the mail on Friday for delivery in the mail on Saturday.

I am a little surprised that the SD would be screwing with the process. I've heard the Sheriff seems to be firearm friendly, maybe that's not the case.

ETA: Glad you finally got your permit. It might still be worth letting MCRGO know about the situation if you haven't already.

I was surprised, too, but it seems pretty clear when I look at the timeline. Where did my app sit for 2.5 - 3 months? At the Sheriff's Department.

Wow, I thought my wait was bad. What county are you in? Did you have to go before the board or anything? Thankfully going before the board is the one part of the process I didn't have to worry about.

3 weeks to the day for me in Macomb.

Whatever their previous issues were with issuance time frames seems to have been corrected in a major way.
