In late June, we're flying out to Salt Lake City to see my brother in law, then driving down to Durango for a few days before heading back east/home.

According to mapquest, the drive will take us right past Moab - any other stops I should make?

For the Utah part, Dead Horse Point State Park, Island in the Sky ( Part of Canyonlands NP ) and Arches NP are all amazing. You could easily drive through all three of these in one day. Add more time if you want to do some hiking. In Arches the hike to Delicate Arch is well worth it IMHO.

Once you make it in to Colorado, make the trek through Mesa Verde. Again easily done within a few hours to a full day depending on how much you want to do on foot, but you can see plenty of ruins by car / short walks to view points.

I am sure I missed some, but those are my favorites.

In Colorado, check out the old mining town of Silverton. If you continue through downtown it will come to a gravel road that will take you back into some beautiful country. Ground clearance could become an issue if you have a vehicle with low ground clearance.

Goblin Valley can be kind of fun, too.
