Will be in SLC 9/10-9/11 -- what to do?

I'm going to be in SLC next weekend. I'm busy Sat morning, but will be free in the afternoon and on Sunday AM. What kinds of things are there to keep me from going stir crazy while I'm on down-time?

It looks like a cheap rental car will not be much more than the cost of a few taxi rides, so I plan to have my own transportation.

Stop by Larry's shop and see if he'll sign a couple of paperbacks?
Local ranges that are worth visiting?
The fine Mormon strip clubs and bars?
Other places of interest?

Larry doesn't have a shop anymore.

There are "strip" clubs. (pasties & g-strings)

Sept 10, you could hit up a sports bar and watch the Utah - USC game with a bunch of crazy rabid Utah fans.

I think Oktoberfest is going up at Snowbird.

Well Crap - guess that rules out getting my books signed and picking up some MHI patches.

Rowdy crowds at a sports bar is not exactly my element.

Snowbird? I'll have to look that place up.

Pasties & g-strings? Odd, but not as odd as the 'mudflap' rules I've read about in Florida.

I'm scared to ask.......but somewhat curious what that is.

I'm pretty sure that means that their junk needs to be neat and tidy in their trunk as it were. LOL

Why don't we have some kind of "Things to see and do in Utah" summary post and sticky it?

Atlanta (actually just north in Marietta, but still considered metro)

As best I can recall, it was a "health and welfare" type law that required some seperation between 'ladybits' and customers. The least intrusive answer found was a clear loincloth type garment. I believe this rule proved about as useful as the one that stated so loosely that a girl must be be 'wearing' something that wrapping her g-string around her ankle still counted. I forget where that gem as from...

I reserve the right to be wrong in a few minor (or major) details, as it has been some years since I read about this.

Will there be any local gunshows that weekend?
Worst case, I guess I can catchup on my Netflix Streming backlog.

It's closed on Sundays, and closes at 5pm on Saturdays so I am not sure if you would have time, but the Browning Firearms Museum in Ogden might be of interest.

You could either drive or hop on the Front Runner train out of Salt Lake and make the trip.

But I'm lazy :)

I'll go through some of the threads this weekend and make a collection of items and get it to you.

Sandy City does a neat event every year honoring the fallen of 9/11. They will also be unveiling a statue that was created and commissioned of the famous 9/11 photo of the firefighters raising the flag over the debris.

I'll try not to hit on her.

....................................... too much.

Well, I almost got one of my items checked off the list. I wound up relaxing in the same hotel room as Larry while at DragonCon. I didn't have my books with me for sigining, as I had no idea this would be happening, but I did get a book blank signed.

Now to order a few MHI patches...

As for bars, I'm not generally a huge bar fan. I try to avoid loud, roudy bars when possible.

Sorry I was confused, you mentioned strip clubs and bars.

Prefix "strip" behind them. The drinks are somehoe better and the noise somewhat more bearable when the staff is so 'entertaining'.

While I have been known to stop in a smaller, quieter (normal) bar, I'm only ever found in anything louder when dragged by someone else. I have no concrete plans for most of my time in SLC, so I'm trying to get a general feel for my options.

What are the liquor laws like in SLC? Is it as like Footloose or are there places to conveniently grab a 6-pack to go?

The Dew Tour will be going on down town, and the Utah State Fair will also be running. The Dew Tour is walking distance from the down town area and the fair park is 10 blocks west of the downtown area. Not sure if either of those may be of interested, but figured I would throw them out as a heads up. Both will create some traffic / access issues in their respective areas.

Those are usually used in construction areas where fresh concrete has been poured. Most likely there were orange cones between the traffic areas and the green cones in the construction area.

Is that at all related to the rabid fury of those behind you when you fail to floor it on the last 1/10'th of a second of a yellow light so they can get through too? I've never seen people get so pissed at someone who doesn't run red lights.

Well, I have a few theories on that one. Very often one could easily get the impression that red lights are a suggestion here in Utah. I have driven in many different states and countries, and I have never seen as many people ignore them as they do here. Be thankful you weren't in Provo. The driving seems to get worse the closer you get to BYU.

There is an LDS song for children called "I am a child of God". My appreciation for it has dwindled in recent years. I think too many adults forget the real meaning, and start to see it as "I am a child of God, so get the hell out of my way".

Keep in mind that I am LDS, but I try to keep some perspective.

I once bypassed Utah County coming back from Moab by turing off Hwy 6 onto Hwy 191 and going up to Duchesne, then taking 40 to 80 just because the Utards pissed me off so bad on the way down and I didn't want to end a great trip by dealing with them again.
