Hi Neighbors
I will be visiting some slot canyons next month in the Paria Canyon - Vermilion Cliffs area and I would like to know about your carry laws.
First I have my AZ CCW permit so I think I am good to go on concealed and open pistol carry? My two sons (both over 21) will be along and they do not have a CCW, can they open carry in the back country? Anything else I need to know about your state regs, I assume the federal parks follow state law on CCW and open carry?

Thanks

Update;

Went with my two sons last week, a spectacular canyon!!

Enjoy the photos

Utah is an open carry state. Anyone (not felons, etc, etc) can open carry. If you have a concealed permit you may open carry with a fully loaded firearm. Without permit, your firearm must be 2 actions from firing. No round in the chamber of a semi-auto covers the 2 actions rule.

Concealed carry reciprocity

In the "back country", you should be OK to carry loaded openly with or without a permit.

The unloaded rule applies mainly to "public streets", so be careful there without a permit.

76-10-505. Carrying loaded firearm in vehicle or on street.
(1) Unless otherwise authorized by law, a person may not carry a loaded firearm:
(a) in or on a vehicle, unless:
(i) the vehicle is in the person's lawful possession; or
(ii) the person is carrying the loaded firearm in a vehicle with the consent of the person lawfully in possession of the vehicle;
(b) on a public street; or
(c) in a posted prohibited area.
(2) Subsection (1)(a) does not apply to a minor under 18 years of age, since a minor under 18 years of age may not carry a loaded firearm in or on a vehicle.
(3) Notwithstanding Subsection (1)(a)(i) and (ii), a person may not possess a loaded rifle, shotgun, or muzzle-loading rifle in a vehicle.
(4) A violation of this section is a class B misdemeanor.

About the vehicle thing, didnt they pass a law that says if you are in your vehicle, it is the same as if you were in your house?

If I remember correctly, that's why they added sections (i) & (ii) to the vehicle part. I believe those weren't there before the new law was passed.

So no open carry on a public street? It's the same as California - Unloaded Open Carry?

Unloaded open carry here is different than from CA. We can have a mag in, but no round in chamber if we don't have a ccw. With a ccw, the laws are different. They fall into the "otherwise authorized by law" category. There are still minor restrictions on where you can carry though, such as churches and government buildings.

We took wire pass trail in so I did not see Buckskin. Either one is going to deliver from what I saw and hear from others.

I hiked Buckskin gultch twice, once about 4 years ago in July, and once 6 years ago in October.

It was beautiful both times, but the July hike was very difficult because of all the water and mud in the bottom of the canyon.

The October hike was much drier, and much more pleasant.

Both times we made an overnighter out of it, camping where Buckskin meets the Paria.
