so I'm on 80 acres or so and have a seasonal mountain runoff creek that feeds a huge culvert. It started last year them damn bitches took out dozens of trees and damned it up. I tried to break it up until I found a bald hornet nest in it so I fell back and regrouped and seemed like the left after it dried up but their back once again now I have a large pond out there. theirs 1 main dam and 2 smaller ones. I found a huge 24" thick base tree fallen by them darn things today really pissing me off now there are dozens of trees half eaten through and the dams have mud in them making them imposible to run my chainsaw when its dry now its 7ft deep at one end and 3 ft over by spillway about 200 yards down. I know theirs a dozen of them their everywhere swimming. the final straw was my 2 game cams that were ruined as they fell the trees they were perm attached too and one bit my chesapeke bay retriever and i shot that bitch with my 45. I have tried leg traps and body traps and no real results other than a rabbit I have tried live traps and in a month only got 1 mean lil bastard AND NO im NOT A OSU FAN ! so my ? is how does one rid the damn and commit genocide on the beaver population? any exspierience any sugestions? this is beaver related so I figure their will be allot of crap for posting this

Dynamite works. Make sure you have minimum safe distance to buildings and people for the charge weight, and that you know what you're doing with respect to priming it and your time fuse burn rate. I don't think it takes much to purchase small amounts (6-8 sticks) except cash and a background check.

Or, you can pick and shovel a hole in the dam and wait with your AR in hand at a good vantage point for the beavers to come repair it. They will need to notice a rapid, significant drop in water level if you don't want to be waiting all day.

thanks! right now I have a pump running to redirect water to other side of damn as its flooding my hay field where my horses are I'll have to see where to get some charges as its out along ways 1/2 mile from structures. I didn't realize you could buy that stuff for general purpose thanks!

I talked to a hunting buddy who use to trap when were having issues with beavers blocking our culvert. He told me, make 100% sure none of your sent gets on the trap. Rubber gloves and waders. If you are going to shoot them , get a hunting license. In Oregon I think it's the Furtaker's License. He also suggested knocking a hole in the dam before dark and waiting. Beavers can hear and see great, so make sure you are well hidden.
Hope that helps, I almost ran over one the other night on my way home from work crossing our bridge. Sadly the people that live by the bridge are very anti hunting....

I don't have 80 acres but I do have about 100 ft of water front on our RV lot up the Long Beach pennisula. Friggin beavers have taken 4 willows (4" truck) and then started on the alders (8" to 18" dia trucks). I had to wrap the remaining 12 or so alders with two layers of 1" chicken wire.

I realize this is too much work for 80+ acres but if you have a few trees you really don't want taken, perhaps this method would be a bandaid...

Next up...Amazon....

That's good idea! Ya my fricken neighbors are anti hunting as well kinda funny as they all raise hundreds of head of cattle then send them off to market. Yet killing a deer bear or ducks out of my pond is horrible in fact last year cougar took down our colt and I ran outside with my 300 smacked as it was feasting and they called odfw! Nerve of people. But ya ill have to try some traps again does bait work ?

As a land owner you can get a special permit/license to "shoot" them without obtaining the full furtakers license. You can't use traps with that license, but at least its something... Maybe do that to get started legally. They are finicky little bastards though. If they spot you they just flip their tail and disappear under the water.

How come pretty women never offer this?

I would be cautious about buying dynamite though. With the current political climate, I wouldn't want to get onto anyone's federal list for possession of it...even if it is legal. When my brother took a class in it at college, (back in the 70's) they told him that that group of people would be one of the first places police would look if anything unusual happened. I seriously doubt that in today's climate any college (even a "farm college") would offer classes on blasting.

One last beaver comment. I had one brother go to OSU, the other one went to U of O. I went elsewhere. I used to kid them and say that regarding the Oregon college teams: You can beat our ducks, but you can't lick our beavers.

re: dynamite - there are limits to what a person can purchase and possess for individual use. as far as i'm aware for private sales, any primers and bang must be used the day they are purchased. other restrictions apply. i'd bet that enough is sold around the PNW that you're on no more of a list for a small purchase than someone who is into NFA. that said, I have no idea who retails it around here for individual use.

obviously, don't bother with it if you have no training and aren't willing to look into federal, state, local restrictions first. blasts have a way of making neighbors grumpy, and your problems might be compounded if you aren't isolated enough to say "who, me?" if the cops show up.

You may find that tannerite or a pick and shovel allow you to accomplish the same thing with less hassle.

This. I wrestled one of these bastards into a cage with my buddy holding onto the snared end (arm and head caught) while I held onto the tail. I thought one of us were going to loose a few fingers for sure. Made a horrible noise while we did it too. . Anyway, the snares placed in their paths into/out of the water were extremely effective.
