New to Portland Oregon
I’m moving in a month to Portland and have a couple of questions. Thanks for your help in advance.
1) Where is a good place to buy some land and or a farmhouse that is safe from two legged predators?
2) Any recommendations on firearms training facilities would be appreciated. I’m willing to travel up 4 or so hours by car in any direction.
3) Any other advice for an east coast couple moving to the west.
Welcome
First thing is you probably wont be in Portland or even the surrounding suburbs if you want to buy some land. Youll have to look more rural for something affordable like that which usually means closer to the coast, or the mountains.
There are a lot of facilities within that distance. Im sure some can chime in with their experiences. Im a member at ARPC and have trained at OFA and both are top notch in my opinion.
Sandy, Estacada, Eagle Creek, rural Clackamas County all to the East of Portland have land at reasonable prices. The West side of Portland is a traffic nightmare, but also has land at ok prices.
Oregon is a gun friendly state.
It rains a lot, but things are green here.
I escaped Detroit 20 years ago and it took some getting use to. A lot slower pace out here, mild winters and much lower crime.
The only big professional team out here is the Trail Blazers and I hate the NBA. We have a WHL team here and it's a blast to watch these kids play hockey, more than few make it in the NHL. I am not a big fan of European Kick ball, so I never go to the Portland Timbers.
The people out here are generally nicer than what you are use to. The state really has a lot of great people.
Lots of outdoors things to do, fishing, hunting big game and upland bird if that is your thing. Lots of great places to hike.
Now all the nice things said, the city of Portland is a cesspool. The mayor loves the OWS people, has had a "relationship" with a 17 year old boy and the trustafarians take to the streets to protest everything. Most of them are upper middle class college pukes that have never had to work for anything and hate being told no.
Thanks for your help. I'm looking forward to signing up for classes at OFA and to checking out the areas suggested by flipper1.
I would rent a place on the same side of the river you work. The Willamette river splits PDX, east side and west side. Crossing the bridges in rush hour sucks.
A lot of good outdoor and indoor ranges within a one hour drive, several more in a two hour drive.
It's a lot slower pace out here. Lot of out door activities.
We do have crime, gang bangers and tweakers, but nothing like the east coast.
Welcome to Orygun.
Good advice above.
Plan to live in relation to your job. Crossing pdx as mentioned during rush hours is a PITA.
It is a buyers market for housing but be warned you will run across many that are holding out for the big bucks. I would rent a small place for 6-10 months so you can get a feel for the area and market as well as get settled into work.
Good luck and if you have any questions lmk
Cape
Thanks guys. I appreciate all the input

Throw away all your 10 round mags.

If I were you, I'd move the Bend, buy a bunch of machine guns, sbr's, sbs', suppressors and large capacity magazines.

Bend's great if you never need meaningful employment again.

Meaningful employment can be found in Bend. I make a very good living, as do lots of other people I know. That said, if you're looking to put your master's degree in puppetry to use, you're probably out of luck.
Facebook datacenter in Prineville now.

Why so defensive? I love Bend and hated to leave it, but the IT sector is dead. A few datacenter jobs in Prinetucky don't count, unfortunately.

I'm not being defensive - just pointing out there are good jobs around in Central Oregon, including some it IT. Granted, there are many places with better job opportunities.
Man, it would be awesome to live in eastern oregon and make portland wages...

Pretty tough in Eastern Oregon, but it's possible in Central Oregon.

If I play my cards right, I'll be living in Central OR and making Seattle money.. No company there could offer a similar opportunity.
I feel bad about hijacking the thread.. OP: I would look at SW metro area.. Wilsonville/Sherwood/Newberg area. Good access to the city and can meet your requirements.

Just to get his back on topic for the OP... What type of work do you do and/or will you be looking for?
I live in Washington Co. It is heavy with Intel and businesses that support Intel. Highest percapita income in the state, low crime, etc. But, it is out there in the burbs. Property close to work is a little more expensive so you can go further west and property gets cheaper.

No worries about hijacking the thread. Thanks for the great suggestions.
I’ve been working in IT for the last 13 years. I’m planning on looking for work after I settle in and in the mean time do some consulting. I’m going to stay in the city for a year till I get my bearings and then consider a home purchase depending on how work pans out.
start sniffing around RMLS.com to get a handle on housing / acerage.
I wanna move to Baker City.

Baker City is just where people's wagons broke down and they couldn't fix them to move on

Welcome to Oregon. I too am from NY. Born in Queens. Moved out to Oregon from Long Island back in '99. Oregon is a nice place to live.
Oregon has some pretty diverse terrain, so take some time to travel around and see some country. I just moved out of Wilsonville, probably my favorite place in the valley I've lived. Had to move back to the coast though, I love the wet side.
