I got my TCGC newsletter today and it indicated that the "former rimfire range with be modified in January to be an Action Rifle range (certification required)."
I'm assuming that this means we are getting an action range for our (rifle caliber) AR's. Anyone know anything about this?
From what I was told is that it will be one large bay that will be shared with multiple users at the same time, Think I'll steer clear of this one I've already had a couple of close calls in the last 6 months on the 100 yard range.
They are still working out the details, but there will be some form of certification that you will need to get to gain access to it. And last I heard there will be a bit of a time limit so that one person/group won't hog it. I'm not sure how well it will work out especially in the beginning, but it is a step in the right direction for a wider EBR acceptance at the club.
When will the gravel-misers be done with the big hole so it can become an actual rifle action pit/bays? I swear that Jason or Randy said that was the plan; not sure if it'll be in my lifetime or not...
Turning that .22 bay into an action bay (I think) is definitely a step in the right direction. If you wanna shoot .22's at steel you can do that down in the current bays, eh. I'm curious to see how it plays out with it being only one big bay for everyone to share.
As long as there is gravel to be mined at the big pit, I'm sure that they will continue mining. The club and the gravel company BOTH make money off the gravel, so I wouldn't expect them to give up a "cash cow" like that before the money stops coming in.
I would think that most of the members of the club would ask "What were you thinking?" if the board decided to end a practice that brought in positive cash flow without a better plan to bring in MORE cash...I know I would.
As much as I think that pit would make one fabulous pit for action rifle shooting, money talks, and cash is king. When something happens so that there is no more money in the gravel mining, then I expect the club might look at making it into a shooting area...not before.
But it sure would be cool to have that as an open shooting area for action rifle...I'll bet that local law enforcement would try like the dickens to be on that type of range as often as possible..for good reason (the same reason you and I would like it).
The club is looking better each day. The re-done backstops at the pistol and general range look good. I heard from one of the RO's that membership is almost to capacity

TriCounty Gun Club does not receive any money directly from mining activity. The property the club sits on is owned by Tualitan Valley Sportmans Club which leases it to TCGC. TVSC receives the profits from all mining activity and uses it for legal costs (substantial) and improvements.
The pace of mining activity is dictated by demand, which is in the toilet right now along with most other building activity. If a proposed road expansion in the area goes forward the pace will accelerate substantially. IF.
Mining on the property will probably never stop at least in my life time. As soon as the ranges which are planned to be moved are reopened in the lower range complex the existing areas, including the action range will be mined. This will hopefull continue to generate income and additional area for more future ranges.
The .22 range will function as one large action bay for rifles when it is opened. One person or group at a time, no guests, everyone action range certified, proves competence at a rifle match like PR and then signs off acknowledging the rules.
Every one is looking forward to this one and demand will be high, but it is important to try to get along with fellow club members and try to share like adults. Most people also understand there will be problems and we will need to try to work it out. If demand is high and no safety problem manifest it will prove that more area need to be opened for members.

I didn't know that the club had a "capacity". I thought that they were considering adding a membership cap to the number of members allowed, but decided not to. When did the club institute a membership cap, and how many members will be allowed under the cap?
5,000 I think.
