A question about deer and elk hunting and firearms.

Normally I do not have an opportunity to hunt. My work just doesn't allow for time off in the fall very often. Certainly not for any amount of days in a row. So usually its just my wife that goes Elk hunting. She usually goes over in the coast range with her uncle. However this year, my son would like to hunt too, he finally is old enough, and I am hoping to also get a chance to go out for a while.

My dilemma is that i really don't have enough rifles. My wife will take my Ruger M77 300win mag, and my son will take my winchester 94 30-30. So I was thinking about using my 12 gauge shotgun and slugs for myself. The problem is that my shotgun is a Mossberg 930spx. Now if i am reading the regulations correctly, this gun is not legal to hunt with because it holds 7 + 1 rounds. So my question is, can I just cut a dowel and insert it into the magazine tube to limit total rounds to 4 + 1 to make it legal? Is the factory magazine tube extension going to be a legal problem even with the dowel?

Edited to add:

My other option is my FAL. i am less excited about packing it though, because its a lot heavier. Also I have a five round magazine for the FAL, but wouldn't this be illegal too since I could chamber a round and top off the mag giving me a six round capacity??

yep, a cut down dowel will work just fine. Just make sure that it works to the correct # of shells. I did this to an old shotgun so I could do 2+1 for bird hunting.

If you take the shotgun, take some 7 1/2's and get an upland bird tag for blue grouse. Hunt the graval roads in the evenings. But!!!!, I think you'll need 2+1 for birds.

If you elect to use the FAL, the 5 round magazine is what you need. The fact that you can also chamber a round doesn't matter.

I've got a 30 ought 6 or a 300 win mag that I would be willing to lend to you for your hunting season.

Thanks Chromekilla, I really appreciate the offer. I think I'm covered though. I just got off the phone to some of my relatives about twenty minutes ago and I was explaining the same situation to one of them and he offered to lone me his 300 win mag if I want to use it.

I may go that route and borrow his. Although the idea of taking my shotgun does sort of appeal to me in a strange way. Guess because I just got it and it still has that new gun fun to it!! When money isn't as tight, I will buy my wife a 30-06 so she can have her own rifle and so I can have my .300 win mag back!

Just be sure you know how your SG shoots the slugs and the buckshot and test it at the distances you plan to shoot. Also, if you are looking for a good cheap hunting rifle, try to get a 1903 or a 1903A3 thats been sporterized. I have picked up a couple for well under $200 in the past. Put in a Timney trigger and its about one of the best values going, as long as its not totally shot out.

I bought a P14 Enfield 1917 Winchester years ago for $150. I sent it off to Roger Whitechurch and he converted it to 300 win mag for me. It shoots better than I ever will and it looks great after he refinished it. Just a thought, 03s are great, but the P14/1917 Enfield may be cheaper. And if Sgt York liked it....... Just saying the 03 guys hate when you bring that up

I was wondering about the 5+1 thing too. I bought a couple of those 5rd limiters for the 20rd pmags, but then I didn't think about the 6th round in the chamber.

The other thing I was wondering about was if it matters that it can be converted back to 20 rd in the field with no tools. Could they get ya with the "letter of the law" on that one? I've seen fish/game guys almost hurt themselves trying so hard to shove a third shotgun shell into the mag on my buddy's Benelli... Seemed pretty ridiculous as it was happening; of course it wouldn't fit, but that didn't stop him from being a dick and trying real hard... I kinda wondered that if they'd be so weird about that, would they try and force the issue and be a stickler/dick about a mag that could potentially hold more than 5???

As I understand it, the law is that you must not have a magazine that holds more than 5 rounds "in the gun" while you are hunting. There is nothing in there about the ability to convert. I recall a debate about this a few years ago where it was clarified that you could even have loaded up 30 round magazines on your person while you are hunting (for self defense), however while you are actually hunting, the only magazines that may be inserted into your gun are those that hold no more than 5 rounds.
