 Carrying in vehicle without GWL/CCW

I just bought a pistol and I know that in GA, I can carry in my vehicle as it is an extension of my home.

What is the proper etiquette if I was to be stopped? Inform them and leave it in the glove box? Place on top of dash immediately?

To my knowledge, there is no duty to report in Georgia. I'm sure some LEO types will chime in with what they like/expect, but it's really your call. I would only tell the officer I was armed if or when they request that I step out of the vehicle. Leave both hands on the wheel and ask them what they want you to do. You don't want to end up getting shot while trying to be courteous.

Also, get a Georgia Weapons License if you don't have one already.

that's exactly how I feel. i'm 100% willing to let them know i have it, i just don't want to get drawn on trying to let them know.

edit: getting GWL soon

I don't think you are legally obligated to do anything with the weapon or inform the officer of it's presence UNLESS you are asked/commanded to do so by LEO...

I'm sure someone will chime in and correct me if I'm wrong.....

You don't have to tell us Leo's that it's in the car if you don't want to. I do not recommend taking it out or moving it around while I'm approaching your vehicle. Just leave it where it is

Eta: if for some reason I ask you to step out of the car or ask if there is a weapon in the car, then just advise me of where it's at. I'll usually respond with "don't reach for yours and I won't reach for mine".

Also, make sure the Damn thing is loaded. I've had numerous people inform me that they are carrying but that it's unloaded.

I really don't understand why people do this. It's like the whole racking the pump on a 12ga will cause bad guys to flee in terror thing...

i actually had an officer ask me during a road block if i had any weapons in the car? (i can only guess he saw the glock shirt i was wearing) i told him yes. he then asked "is it loaded?" i responded "yes" then he when on to give me a lecture that the magazine had to be seperate from the gun and on the oposite side of the car.

I later told my cousin who was an officer with the same department and the officer was RE-EDUCATED on GA weapons laws by the police chief.

Most officers do not care. Some tell you that you had better tell them "or else." Some tell you that it is best not to mention it and potentially escalate the situation. Some officers over-react. Some seize the weapon and run the serial numbers and take the magazine out and take all of the ammunition out of the magazine and return each cartridge to you singly (Florida Highway Patrol instructs their officers to do this in writing). Some do not know the law. Some do.

I think it is safer not to disclose it and not to reach for it. I was a police officer for 12 years.

As for placing it on top of the dash, I would not be touching it AT ALL during a traffic stop. Wherever it is, leave it.

Know if there is a duty to disclose in another state if you are travelling.

The best thing to do is STFU about a weapon.

But if asked, don't lie.

Don't be confrontational about being asked. He's probably just asking you because the BFL, SigArms decal, Don't Tread on Me Flag, and FBHO engraved on your back glass; sparked his spidey sense.

Be friendly/non-threatening (as you should genuinely be anyways).

And take that shit off your back window.
