Buying vehicle in CO, driving back to MO - plate/reg question

I am buying a truck in Colorado from an individual (not dealer) and will be driving it back to MO. Won't have the title, but will have a bill of sale, and will have insurance on it before the drive back.

Is there anything else I need to do to be legal? I've read that some states have a "trip/travel permit" but can't find online whether MO does.

Thought about taking the plates off my Dodge pickup and using them on the Toyota for the drive back. Will end up calling the MO license office here locally and asking, but thought someone here might have done this in the past and have some advice.

Not sure I would take plates for a Dodge and put them on a Toyota.....would think it may be illegal, if not just something that raises red flags.

I would call a DMV in CO and ask if they can issue temp tags for vehicles bought from an individual. If they can't, ask them if they have dealt with it in the past and how to do everything correctly.

MO does have a trip travel permit, i believe it was $8 or $12 if i remember correctly. if you just bought it and have Bill of Sale you should be fine and not need it, but an extra few bucks is never a bad thing for insurance

Those days are loooong over. Don't do this. IMO it would cause more headaches than no plate at all. A bill of sale should suffice but your already having insurance coverage on the vehicle should be icing on the top. The DMV will probably try to force you to spend the $$ on a temporary tag.

OK, I will nix the idea of borrowing the other tags. Now that I think of it, that would be a good way to end up part of a felony traffic stop. No thanks. :)

I will indeed call the dmv tomorrow and see about getting that permit.

Thanks!
