Need info/advice on selling wrecked vehicle in KCMO
Vehicle is a 1996 Chevrolet S-10 extended cab pickup with 4.3L V-6, automatic transmission. Truck only has 79,000 miles on it and WAS in great shape. My father (the owner) was driving it recently and experienced a brake failure while trying to back the truck into his garage ––- wound up punching the gas pedal and SMASHING the back end of the truck into the corner of the garage. [Hey... he's in his 80's. This stuff just happens!]
So, he doesn't want to keep the truck (has another vehicle to drive) and I don't want to put the time/money into fixing it back up. Any advise on selling it "as is" ––- go with a private party sale or just sell it to a salvage yard? Anyone have experience with KCMO area salvage yards that will pay a fair amount for a vehicle with LOTS of good, usable parts?
Salvage yards are similar to pawn shops....they dont want to give you shit for your truck. I would try to sell it outright...mabey Craigslist or something like that. Some HS kid would love to get his hands on a cheap fixer upper like that.
Since most "parts cars" are wrecked up front, your truck with rear end damage should still sell easily.
Besides, it's the back end of a pickup. Doesn't one simply replace the entire bed?

Thats what I would do.....heat and beat the bolts til they loosen up, lift off with tractor and bucket, slide on replacement, bolt down.......
.....finding a bed with the same paint color would be a major bonus, but paint can always be corrected later.
I'd be all over it if I had some extra scratch right now.
Did it get into the rear end or the back of the cab? If not it should be an easy fix.
ya S-10 beds are cheap. no need for a forklift, 2 guys can do it
Yeah... the selling to a private party (and forgetting about salvage yards) does make sense. Was a shame it got smashed up ––- it has less than 80,000 miles on the odometer.
Floor of bed is crumpled on up to the wheel wells. Not sure if there is any frame damage ––
He must have hit the gas pretty hard. The crash impact jolted his upper body back hard enough to bend/break the seat and his HEAD took out the back glass ––
Very low mileage for a 1996 vehicle ––

Ouch!!! Hows the house look?

Garage is an old stand alone 2-car made from THICK concrete blocks. Doesn't look hurt a bit!
Thanks for the advice. Listed the truck on Craigslist and sold it to the first person that replied!

You priced it too low then.

That's the way to go on Craigslist. I've sold 2 cars and a 4 wheeler on there. Each time I had dozens of people calling the first day they were listed. That way If the first person to show doesn't want to pay my asking price, I'm ok telling them no thanks, there are others that are interested. The first person to show usually pays my price.
I like listing stuff just a little low, so I don't have to spend a couple weeks answering emails and phone calls and waiting to meet tire kickers at McD's. Sure I could make a little more if I held out, but I'm paid by the hour so I know exactly what my time is worth (and weekends are double time!).

What? I just tell them to meet at my place where the beer is free.

I'm too paranoid for that. I've had people ask for my address (via text message) so they can drive by and look at whatever car I'm selling during the day. No thanks. I'm 2 min from the golden arches anyways. I do have free beer at my house though, as long as you like PBR. Let me know you're on your way I can even get bottles.
